A new
musical by Broadway writer, Jonathan Brielle Holtzman (Foxfire,
Himself and Nora) will headline alongside six time Emmy and Tony
nominee, Tovah Feldshuh (Golda’s Balcony, Pippin,
Becoming Dr. Ruth), in his semi-autobiographical musical:
humorous tales of growing up in Asbury Park, wrestling with
gangsters, corporate America, two ex-wives, a monkey from his Las
Vegas extravaganza, and of course features his overbearing
theatrical Jewish mother all in the name of learning to love yourself
to find love. This high energy musical is directed and
choreographed by Kelli Barclay (associate on 42nd
Street, State Fair and Irving Berlin’s White
Christmas) and features a hard swinging eight-piece big band all
joining the fun on stage. A Monkey and Me may
make you laugh and consider all the things you should tell your
mother!

The Axelrod
Performing Arts Academy presents The Addams Family,
the new musical by Andrew Lippa with a book by Marshall Brickman and
Rick Elice. America’s favorite “creepy and kooky” family, The
Addams Family was a hit TV series in the 1960s and the subject
of five Hollywood films. The musical is based on Charles Addams’
original single-panel cartoons and the musical focuses on an
18-year-old Wednesday who has fallen in love with a “normal” teenager
from Ohio and the chaos that ensues as the Addams face the
possibility of changing their traditional macabre ways. The
Addams Family is directed by Michael LaFleur with
music direction by Michael Gilch.

Set in the
romantic worlds of Venice and Ireland of yesteryear, two one-act
operas—Suor Angelica by Giacomo Puccini and Pietá by
Jake Landau and Andrea DelGuidice—explore themes of devoted
motherhood and twisted family ties, tangled by the grandest of
operatic themes…love, incest, madness, imprisonment and death. The
ravishing score of Puccini’s opera is complemented by the soaring
original music of Jake Landau, one of the most promising musical
theater composers on the scene today. The two one-act operas are
directed and “conceived as one” by DelGuidice. The cast features
tenor David Smolokoff, sopranos Claire Leyden and Jordan
Bowman and mezzo-soprano Devony Smith. The
operas will be accompanied by a live orchestra conducted by Jason
Tramm.
