Livingston Symphony Orchestra Family Concert: Sousa-Palooza

WHEN: Sunday, March 6, 2022, at 2:00 pm
WHERE:
Livingston High School, 30 Robert Harp Drive, Livingston NJ 07039
ADMISSION
free with donations graciously appreciated.

We’ve all viewed Fourth of July fireworks while listening to the patriotic “Stars and Stripes Forever,” saluted our marines to their official hymn, “Semper fidelis,” or perhaps even enjoyed the theme song used for “Monty Python’s Flying Circus.”

These are all pieces of music composed by the “March King” John Philip Sousa, the most American of composers, also known for his operettas, songs, dances, suites, and more.

As the great American Bandmaster, John Phillip Sousa was also an outstanding musician and dedicated entertainer. His philosophy of concert programming was rather simple:

“It is not incongruous to me to see a comedy scene immediately following a tragic scene in Shakespeare or any other of the master dramatists, or laughter following tears in the romantic drama. Therefore, I have no hesitation in combining in my program clever comedy with symphonic tragedy, rhythmic march or waltz with sentimental tone pictures.”

Following in Sousa’s footsteps, this family concert will entertain as it introduces listeners, young and old, to the sounds of the orchestra.

Works on the program will feature Sousa's most famous marches, including The Thunderer and Stars and Stripes Forever, as well as two of his lesser-known works, The Presidential Polonaise and The Gliding Girl. Other pieces on the program will include Rossini's Barber of Seville, Johann Strauss' Blue Danube Waltz and a collection of American folk songs, The American Frontier.

Conducted by natural storyteller Maestro Anthony LaGruth, this Livingston Symphony Orchestra Family Concert is ideally suited for children of all ages and for families who want to discover the amazing sounds of the symphony orchestra.

The suburban venue is wheelchair accessible with free adjacent parking.

Age-appropriate masking and proof of Covid 19vaccination will be required for the safety of all audience members and as per venue policy.
