Exile: Music of the Early-Modern Jewish Diaspora

Musical Performance with Commentary

A concert with spoken commentary, Exile explores Jewish musical culture in early modern Europe and its encounters with other traditions. The performance features the period-instrument ensemble Incantare in conjunction with Professor Rebecca Cypess, Rutgers Department of Music, and other special guests. The program sheds light on the powerful role played by Jews in musical life during this volatile period.

 


 

An affiliated faculty member in Jewish studies since 2017, Rebecca Cypess is Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at Mason Gross and Associate Professor in the Department of Music. She is not only an author of the Exile program, but also performs on harpsichord and organ.
