Today, we are revisiting the Folger Theatre production of District Merchants. The play, a variation of Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice, was a Folger Theatre world premiere by Aaron Posner, directed by Michael John Garcés.

District Merchants is set among the Black and Jewish populations of an imagined time and place that is simultaneously the post-Civil War period of Washington D.C.; the early modern period of Venice as depicted by Shakespeare; and contemporary times.

Actor Dani Stoller, who plays Jessica, joins us to introduce this evocative ENCORES selection.

We hope you enjoy this and other ENCORES to come. Keep an eye on your inbox as we continue to share our favorite moments from the Folger stage.

Nathan the Wise Now On Stage

The cast of Nathan the Wise

Nathan the Wise

On stage at Theater J through April 10

Folger Theatre, in association with Theater J, is presenting Nathan the Wise by Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, and adapted by Michael Bloom. This funny and timely 18th-century Shakespeare-styled play is "highly satisfying, well-acted, and tightly directed" (DC Metro Theater Arts).

Read an interview with Michael Bloom in
The Washington Post, where he describes Shakespeare as "Lessing’s favorite writer...he used a lot of the Bard’s tropes: a five-act structure, mix-ups at birth, comic relief."  Watch cast members of Nathan the Wise and Director Adam Immerwahr speak about the play.
