The Abram Matlofsky Memorial Program

Author Dan Grunfeld in conversation with Craig Karmazin, CEO, Good Karma Brands, and grandson of Abram Matlofsky

Former NBA player and executive Ernie Grunfeld is the only athlete in NBA history whose parents survived the Holocaust. A new book written by his son, former professional basketball player Dan Grunfeld, details their family’s history and extraordinary American story, as well as the profound impact that basketball has had in their lives. Ernie Grunfeld was ten years old when his family immigrated to America from Communist Romania, with no knowledge of English and having never touched a basketball. Roughly ten years later, he stood on the podium as an Olympic gold medalist for the United States.

The Abram Matlofsky Memorial Program is made possible through an endowed gift from the Karma Foundation, led by Sharon M. Karmazin (DC'67, SC&I'69), Dina Elkins, and Craig Karmazin. Established at the Bildner Center in 2000, this annual program honors the memory of Sharon's father and focuses on American Jewish culture. We are grateful to the Karma Foundation for its generous support.
