Synopsis: Three couples on a university
campus deal with the painful, rewarding and agonizingly funny
consequences of the universal experience of pregnancy and upcoming
parenthood. There are the college students, barely at the beginning
of their adult lives; the thirty-somethings, having trouble
conceiving but determined to try; and the middle-aged parents,
looking forward to seeing their last child graduate from college...
when a night of unexpected passion lands them back where they

Character Gender/Age Range Description
A2 to A4
A musician and
composer in his junior year of college who is also on the college
track team. He is Lizzie’s loving boyfriend who is supportive
and committed to sharing the responsibility of raising their
child. Ability to play keyboard and/or guitar is a plus, but
Pop Mezzo G3
A writer and
lyricist in her junior year of college. Danny’s strong-willed
and loving girlfriend who is determined not to follow a conventional
path when it comes to their relationship and to motherhood.
Baritone B2 to
A charming college
administrator who is married to Arlene. Somewhat at a loss as
to how to negotiate their relationship now that their three children
are grown, he is thrilled by the possibility of returning to the
familiar role of father to a new child in his life.
Mezzo B3 to A♭5
community volunteer who is married to Alan. Her unexpected
pregnancy forces her to choose between falling back into the
comforting familiar patterns of her life as a mother or taking the
frightening step of trying something completely new.
Mezzo G3 to F5
neurotic and insecure, yet energetic and charming women’s collegiate
basketball coach. Deeply in love with her husband Nick, she
very much wants to have a child with him and fulfill her wish to be
the ideal wife and mother.
Baritone B2 to
collegiate track coach and married to Pam. He is nurturing and
supportive and very much wants to have a child, both to make Pam
happy and to fulfill his wish to be a father. Quirky and
playful, at times he uses jokes to cover his vulnerability.
A group of
townspeople and students who guide the audience through the
nine-month journey of the play. They also play various characters throughout
the story and should all be comfortable with solo singing.
