The Jewish Heritage Museum of Monmouth County presents a three-part series of lectures with slides, The Various Views of Zionism, by Dr. Andrew Meyer, Professor of History at Brooklyn College. Dr. Meyer holds a BA in East Asian Studies from Brown University and a Ph.D. in East Asian Languages and Civilization from Harvard University.

Though it is often conventional to speak of “Zionism” as a unified movement that has never been so in reality. From the earliest days of modern Zionist activism in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the movement was diverse and fraught with internal conflict. This series will review the history and nature of five of the most prominent and influential forms for Zionism, with an eye toward both understanding the history of Zionism’s past and grasping its potential trajectory in the future.

  • The January 30th lecture deals with Labor Zionism, a movement dedicated to the transformation of the Jewish people into member of the “working class.”
  • The February 20th lecture will focus on Revisionist Zionism, the inspiration behind the formation of institutions like the Irgun and Likud Party.
  • The final lecture on March 20th will present Religious Zionism, Christian Zionism, and Binational Zionism, minority movements with significant influence on the history and politics of the larger Zionist movement.

Funding has been made possible in part by a general operating support grant from the New Jersey Historical Commission, a Division of the Department of State, through grant funds administered by the Monmouth County Historical Commission.

The Jewish Heritage Museum is located in the Mounts Corner Shopping Center, at 310 Mounts Corner Drive, Freehold, NJ, at the corner of Route 537 and Wemrock Road (between the CentraState Medical Center and Freehold Raceway Mall).
