Yiddish Film "Brussels Transit" +Yinglish Mikado: Yiddish NY Fest all week online!

YiddishNY FilmFest: Brussels Transit

WHEN & WHERE: online all week! Eve Sicular & panel Tues 12/28

What's not to love at Yiddish New York Festival 2021? Participants from around the world join in Dec 25-30 for a virtual wonderland. Bandleader Eve Sicular is thrilled to deliver both Film Fest & Lecture programs!

First up, her movie curator dream has finally come true: YNY brings newly restored 1980 Yiddish-Belgian masterpiece Brussels Transit—streaming for a full week**—and she will moderate a stellar international talk-back discussion with Amy Taubin, Lynne Tillman & Boris Lehman

Tuesday, 12/28, 1 PM (panel online 1:30pm-2:45pm Eastern Time).

"This Belgian Yiddish masterpiece reveals more nuance every time I see it; my first viewing was at MoMA 1992. Director Samy Szlingerbaum brought his mother’s/parents’ postwar migration story to unique, subtly poignant cinematic form. This seldom-seen 1980 feature was his only full-length work. We are honored to feature lead actor Boris Lehman [pictured above] as well as cineastes Amy Taubin & Lynne Tillman in the discussion."

**Viewing On Demand is available from 12/24 til midnight 12/30 to registered attendees—as many times as you like during the 7-day window starting today until 11:59pm on Thursday, Dec 30. Check for film-only discount rates too.

Yinglish Mikado, Poconos/MGM: Eve Sicular & Allen Lewis Rickman YNY

WHEN:

Wednesday, Dec 29 (AM schedule, 9:30am-10:45am ET)
WHERE: Zoom
Details /Registration here: yiddishnewyork.com/2021-class-schedule-program-guide/

Join bandleader/film maven Eve Sicular to explore a certain hilarious and highly revealing Yinglish Mikado, starring young Danny Kaye (& initially Jerome Robbins too, in Tamiment resort days) originated during the fraught summer of 1939.

It next emerged as a loaded Hollywood party piece, this time featuring Kaye & Mank in drag with Judy Garland performing triple entendres. Get your campy British Yiddish on, come hear Eve and Allen Lewis Rickman—star of Yiddish stage and screen, as well as a major G&S expert—share the scripts for this most unexpected set of Hasidim from Gilbert & Sullivan’s Japan via a sophisticated Max Liebman-era Poconos & wartime MGM behind the scenes. All streaming online!

Full YNY Film Fest (& extra Alex Parke feature)

We are happy to see that another of the Yiddish New York films streaming this week—When Tango Meets Klezmer—is from Brazil, with klezmer clarinet aficianado /Sao Paolo native and 2021 Klezbos guest Alexander Borger Parke onscreen and in archival exploration mode. In addition, check Sunday Night Concert schedule for upcoming announcements, as below. Hope to see and hear more of this guy soon!

YNY Concert change: Online only & check lineup for Sunday, Dec 26!

Yiddish New York's planned triple bill with Isle of Klezbos will be modified due to this time of extra Covid caution (no audience at venue, streaming only).

We are sorry not to be able to offer our evening 12/26 original performance plan, but Yiddish New York is putting together great onstage online alternatives.

Wishing all well: "Blayb gezunt" בלײַב געזונט into the New Year
and, as needed, "refueh shleyme"—timely recovery to full health
