January 1 - January 31

There’s a lot of beauty to be seen in Frelinghuysen Arboretum's winter garden just waiting for you to go look for it!  You might even see some hints that spring is really only two and a half months away.  Get outside and explore the gardens with this contact-less family photo scavenger hunt.  Check it out!

Cost: $10 per family (family/group of 4 or less).  Preregistration is required.

 

PLANT OF THE MONTH: AWESOME AVOCADOS

January 3

One fruit, one seed, one tree.  Learn all about this single seeded fruit and start your own avocado tree to grow indoors.  Click here for more info.

OWLS OF NJ WALK AND TALK

January 4 at Pyramid Mountain & January 5 at Great Swamp

Walk out into the darkening trails of Pyramid Mountain or the Great Swamp to learn about and look for owls.  We'll discover which owls call our state home and why winter is a good time to try to see them.  We will play recorded owl calls out on the trails in hopes of getting one to call back to us.  Learn more here!

MAPLE SUGARING DEMOS

Saturdays & Sundays: January 15, 16, 22, 23, 29, and 30, February 5, 6, 12, 13, 19, 20, 26, and 27, March 5, 6, and 12

Learn how to identify and tap maple trees, collect sap, and make real maple syrup over a wood-fired evaporator.  This year, the program will be held entirely outdoors, so dress for the weather.  Spiles and syrup will be available for purchase, while supplies last.  Learn more here!

See Fosterfields like never before.  The beauty of a chilly January morning is brought to life by the rays of the sun, glistening on frosted trees, buildings and fences.  We might even see some snow blanketing the farm.  Amateur and professional photographers are invited to this unique morning experience to photograph the beauty of the farm.  Click here to learn more!

After school is a great time to take a nature walk and discover new facts about New Jersey's wildlife.  Join a naturalist to learn about a new animal every month!  Click here for more info.
