The Christmas Bird Count at Greenwood Gardens

With Carl Woodward, Greenwood Gardens Trustee

WHEN: Saturday, December 18, 2021,
Noon to 3:00 p.m. – Rain or Shine
WHERE: Greenwood Gardens, 274 Old Short Hills Rd., Short Hills
ADMISSION: free to adults, ages 13 and up; limited to 20 participants. Registration required.

The Christmas Bird Count (CBC) is an annual event hosted by the National Audubon Society where volunteer birdwatchers throughout the northern Western Hemisphere take a census of wild bird sightings. The goal is to provide population data that will aid conservation biology and scientific research. The CBC is the longest-running citizen science survey in the world.

Carl Woodward, long-time member of Greenwood Gardens’ Board of Trustees and avid birdwatcher, will serve as host for this special holiday tradition. Carl will lead a group exploration through our historic site in search of the birds that winter here. Our findings, considered part of the Watchung Ridges Count, will be reported to the National Audubon Society, and will be included in its annual report of North American bird sightings.

Meet in the parking lot shortly before noon. We will walk the gardens together. Basic bird identification knowledge is helpful but not necessary. Cameras welcome.

NOTE: The CBC is rain or shine. Dress warmly, wear sturdy, warm footwear, and good gloves. Bring binoculars and bird guides. A thermos of something warm to drink may be helpful.
