A BRONX TALE THE MUSICAL FINAL WEEK...PLAYS THROUGH SUNDAY

Few productions score standing ovations every night, but A BRONX TALE THE MUSICAL, the Axelrod’s first show back since the Covid shutdown, is the exception. Philip Dorian, writing for SCENEONSTAGE.COM, calls A BRONX TALE “a stylish and engaging production.”

The musical, with an appealing and effective score by Oscar, Tony and Grammy winner Alan Menken and Glenn Slater, was directed by Richard H. Blake, a stage veteran with 15 Broadway shows under his belt, who “brings affection and insight from the Broadway run.” The production is choreographed by Abbey O’Brien (Associate Choreographer of Broadway’s Waitress and Jagged Little Pill).

“It is first-rate entertainment,’ concludes Dorian in his recent review.

THE MANHATTAN TRANSFER COMES TO BELL WORKS

One of the jazz world’s most iconic vocal groups, The Manhattan Transfer will be appearing for a special concert at the Bell Works Theater, hosted by the Axelrod Performing Arts Center, on Saturday, November 20, at 8 PM. Established in 1972, The Manhattan Transfer scored their first international hit in 1975 with “Operator” and then went on to win multiple Grammy Awards over the following decades. Whether styling in pop, rock, jazz, swing or R&B, their sound is unmistakable. The members of The Manhattan Transfers are Janis Siegel, Alan Paul, Cheryl Bentyne, and Trist Curless.

This concert is dedicated to Anne Vogel, the recently deceased wife of Sheldon Vogel, the former executive of Atlantic Records. Long-time patrons of the Axelrod PAC, Sheldon and Anne have been good friends with the group for decades. Janis Siegel shares, “In our 50 years, we have had many allies and supporters but Sheldon Vogel has been our angel throughout our career…and we are happy to be raising our voices in memory of his loving wife.”

THE SPONGEBOB MUSICAL OPENS NOV. 27

How about starting your holiday season in Bikini Bottom with SpongeBob and his eccentric friends, Patrick Star, Sandy Cheeks, Sheldon J. Plankton, Eugene H. Krabs and Squidward Q. Tentacles?!

The Axelrod Performing Arts Academy presents its first musical, The SpongeBob Musical, for two weekends: November 27-28 and December 4-5. The show is being directed by Abby C. Smith, the original Mrs. Puff from the Broadway production, with choreography by Robert Taylor, Jr., also a member of the original cast.

One of the hippest new musicals to hit the Broadway stage, The SpongeBob Musical features a fantastic score by such rock and pop greats as Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Yolanda Adams, John Coulton, and Sarah Bareilles. You don’t have to be a Nickelodeon fan to love SpongeBob!

This is the perfect musical for the whole family—your kids or grandkids will love the dancing Sardines, Electric Skates and assorted sea creatures, and you’ll be equally entertained by how SpongeBob manages to stamp out corruption and save the world from imminent destruction!
