Axelrod PAC Celebrates Theater Reopening With A Bronx Tale and More!

A BRONX TALE WITH BROADWAY VETERAN RICHARD H. BLAKE

A Bronx Tale, The Musical, based on the play and the film by Chazz Palminteri, will reopen the Axelrod Performing Arts Center in Ocean Township, on the campus of the JCC Jersey Shore. Making his directorial debut at the Axelrod, Richard H. Blake has been performing on Broadway since the late 1980s, when he shared the stage with legendary actors Christopher Plummer, Glenda Jackson and Len Cariou. On Broadway, he also created the role of Lorenzo in A Bronx Tale and has played the following roles: Tommy DeVito in Jersey Boys, Fiyero in Wicked, Warner in Legally Blonde, Link in Hairspray, Radames in Elton John and Tim Rice’s Aida and Roger in Rent. Richard first appeared at the Axelrod in 2015 when he created the role of Eli Cohen in the musical Damascus Square.

Set in an Italian-American neighborhood in the racially charged 1960s, A Bronx Tale began its life on stage at Paper Mill Playhouse and went to Broadway with Robert DeNiro, the film’s co-star opposite Palminteri, and Jerry Zaks directing. A Bronx Tale, with a Motown/early rock-inflected score by Oscar, Grammy and Tony Award winner Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, Newsies, Little Shop of Horrors), tells the story of an Italian-American kid torn between following the working-class family values instilled in him by his father and the compelling world of organized crime, introduced to him by the mob boss who becomes his father figure. The musical has been described as West Side Story meet Jersey Boys… a hard combo to beat!

The Axelrod production previews on Friday, October 29, and runs through Sunday, November 14.
