Special Announcement from NJSO Music Director Xian Zhang
Dear
Patrons, As we
actively plan our return to the stage this fall for an in-person 2021–22
season, I want to share news about an exciting and important addition to the
NJSO family. Daniel Bernard Roumain, whose work the NJSO
has performed most recently in the powerful commission that was featured in
our TRANSCEND concert film, will be joining our artistic leadership group
through the 2022–23 season. |

Daniel
will be our Resident
Artistic Catalyst, bringing new commissions, dynamic performances
and advisory activities to support our education and community programs. This
is a new role here at the NJSO, and I am incredibly proud that Daniel has
collaborated on its creation. A quick
sneak peek at the new season we are planning: Daniel will perform his Voodoo Violin Concerto for
our season premiere. It’s truly a striking piece, and I can’t wait to conduct
it. Additionally, the NJSO will premiere two new commissions from Daniel over
the next two seasons. Daniel is
an incredible educator as well. He will coach our young musicians of the NJSO
Youth Orchestras, engage with the students of the El Sistema New Jersey
Alliance and partner with the NJSO on new digital content for school
communities. The reach
of Daniel’s advisory role will extend beyond performances and community, as
he’ll also be joining the NJSO’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI)
Committee. He has been an important voice leading conversations around DEI in
our industry, and his experience will bring an opportunity to advance the
NJSO’s growth in these areas of focus. It’s with
great admiration and appreciation that we acknowledge founding Amadeus Circle
and Laureate Society member Judith Musser for the support that has made this
addition possible. An active member of our DEI Committee, Judy is dedicated
to fostering the work of artists who speak to issues of today and push
cultural institutions beyond their traditional roles. Thank you so much,
Judy! This news
of Daniel joining us is really exciting, and it is just the beginning of
what’s to come. Daniel has been a great friend to the NJSO since our
co-commissioning of his groundbreaking work Dancers, Dreamers and Presidents in 2011. We
now look to develop an even deeper relationship with him. Very soon we will
have more great news about our summer activities, which will also include
Daniel. I can speak on behalf of everyone here at the NJSO—we appreciate your
patience as we finalize our plans for a safe return, and I can’t wait for our
entire NJSO family to meet Daniel! Hope to
see you again soon, |
