History of the Super Bowl with Evan Weiner

The Super Bowl is much more than a football game. It's the only sports event that impacts every community in the United States. But did you know that the Super Bowl rose out of the civil rights movement, specifically the African American boycott of the AFL All Star Game in New Orleans? Veteran sports broadcaster Evan Weiner will take us on a journey from the birth of the Super Bowl to the elaborate halftime shows of today.

Valentine's Greetings with Kevin Woyce

Why do lovers send greeting cards, candy, and roses on February 14? In his newest holiday program, author, photographer, and musician Kevin Woyce explores the romantic history of Valentine's Day, from Saint Valentine, Cupid, and the first Valentine cards to some of the season's most popular songs. The slideshow is illustrated with original photographs and lots of vintage Valentine's Day cards and art.

Book discussion of Breathe: A Letter to My Sons by Imani Perry. Writing in the tradition of W.E.B DuBois and James Baldwin, Imani Perry's critically acclaimed memoir takes the form of a letter to her two sons, in which she probes the heart-wrenching fears and frustrations faced by mothers raising African American sons in an increasingly racist society. Moderated by Jon Michaud.

Magical Melodies with Mr. Chris

Let's rock! Join us for 45 minutes of high energy songs with Mr. Chris on his guitar followed by a parade with Mr. Chris on his trombone! Back by popular demand, Mr. Chris will get everyone dancing! Mr. Chris has been creating dance parties since 2016. He is known for his high energy performances that get everyone dancing, kids and adults alike.

Mission D.I.C.E. (Design Innovate Create Educate) Workshop for Kids

Thursday Feb 4 | 4:00pm

Calling all 4th and 5th graders! Interested in creating objects for 3D printers? Join us for Aditya Dutt's workshop in 3D Modeling, an introduction in how to create 3D digital models of real-world objects! Using Tinkercad, participants will be able to create a 3D digital model of a keychain in this 2 hour beginner workshop. Participants must have a laptop or desktop with internet access, and preferably a mouse. There is no software to download. Limited to 12 kids.

 

Tales for Black History Month: Storytelling with Julie Pasqual

Thursday Feb 11 | 4:00pm

Join performer Julie Pasqual via Zoom for a half hour of storytelling honoring Black History Month. She will sharing folktales and original stories celebrating African American history. Julie is a renowned storyteller whose credits include performing at the Kennedy Center and the Big Apple Circus! Register here to receive the Zoom link a day before the event.

Alma Woodsey Thomas Take + Makes

Celebrate the work of famed African American artist Alma Woodsey Thomas with this special mosaic art take-and-make inspired by her work. Art instructor Doris Benter will guide you via a pre-recorded video so that you can create at your own pace. Supply is limited so you must register for this Take + Make.

Meditation for Teens & Young Adults

In this session, Carlos Alberto and Jeremy Lehrer, longtime meditation teachers who co-lead the Meetup group The Meditation Lab, will teach the basics of meditation and explore its role in keeping focused and calm. The session, tailored to young adults, will include instruction, discussion, and practice, a blend that Carlos and Jeremy have refined through years of teaching. Presented by Plan the Path.

Get volunteer hours for doing what you love to do already: reading.

 

Take and Makes for February

 

For Kids: Each week, children are invited to take home a bag of craft supplies to make a specific project.

 

For Teens: Ages 12-18. Stop by the Reference Desk for a DIY chocolate fondue/s'mores kit.

 

For Adults: Stop by the Reference Desk for a DIY bath bomb.



Take and makes available while supplies last. Only one take and make per person please.

The NJ State Library has arranged for access to Brainfuse through June 30, 2021. Brainfuse is an online learning platform for many elementary and middle/high school classes with access to live tutoring in many subjects. There's also test prep, ELL help, and adult learner resources. Check it out here or on our home page.
