End of World War II

WHERE: on Reel America®
WHEN: 10 pm ET Saturday,  4 pm ET Sunday

Seventy-five years ago, on Aug. 15, 1945, Victory over Japan Day marked the end of World War II. We feature three films about the state of affairs immediately after the war.

  • Road to Democracy (1948) documents the first three years of reforming and rebuilding Japanese society.
  • Here is Germany (1945) is an orientation film for occupying forces that takes a harsh look at the country's history and explores how a civilized people could launch war and murder millions of innocent civilians.
  • A Ceiling on Your Home! (1946) is a short film arguing that wartime rent and price controls should continue for returning veterans amid a housing shortage.
In case you missed it: We recently aired programs to mark the 75th anniversary of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. You can watch both programs by clicking the links above. All programs that have aired are available to watch anytime in our Video Library.
