D&R Greenway Begins Marchand Meadow at St. Michaels Farm Preserve
|
Thanks to the generous contributions of
D&R Greenway supporters,
this week we begin creating Marchand
Meadow
at St. Michaels Farm
Preserve in Hopewell.
Before we can plant wildflowers to draw bees, butterflies,
and other pollinators, we must first kill off the non-native grasses and
weeds. Please don't be alarmed by the initial phases of the project!
The new meadow is being planted in the footprint of the former Orphanage. It is a tribute to the children who once lived here.
"As it transitions, the meadow will remind us of the orphanage site's transformation from a foreboding place to one of beauty—full of color, butterflies and people who now find joy and peace on this land."

Honoring Phyllis MarchandThe new meadow has been named for long-time Princeton Mayor Phyllis Marchand, who has played a key role in preserving land, both as an elected official and as a member of D&R Greenway's Board of Trustees. The short video below was produced for our Virtual Gala in May to raise funds for the meadow and other projects. During the event, Phyllis received the Donald B. Jones Conservation Award. "I care about D&R Greenway because I care about the legacy I will leave to my grandchildren and to all future generations...take care of each other, take care of our planet and enjoy 'Land for Life!'" —Phyllis Marchand, Former Mayor and Preservationist |
