RVCC Holocaust Institute Sets Online Summer Book Series Focusing on Resilience and Hope

The Institute for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Raritan Valley Community College will present a three-session, online summer book series:

Resilience During Challenging Times: Books that Provide Hope

WHEN: Tuesday, June 30, from 2-3 p.m.; Friday, July 31, 3-4 p.m.; Friday, August 28, 3-4 p.m.

The series will begin on Tuesday, June 30, from 2-3 PM, with a program featuring Georgia Hunter, New York Times-bestselling author of We Were the Lucky Ones. Hunter will discuss the research that went into her book, which details her family history and story of survival. Her book has been translated into 15 languages and has been selected as a top pick by Harper’s Bazaar, the New York Post, People magazine and Audible, among others.


Other segments include:

  • Friday, July 31, 3-4 p.m., featuring a discussion of Refugee by Alan Gratz
  • Friday, August 28, 3-4 p.m., featuring a discussion of A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier by Ismael Beah

The books featured in the series all highlight how individuals survived in perilous conditions in areas of conflict.

The books are available as audiobooks or e-books through the Somerset County Library System at https://somerset.overdrive.com/.

The series is being co-sponsored by The Jewish Federation of Somerset, Hunterdon, & Warren Counties, the Holocaust Education Center of the Shimon and Sara Birnbaum Jewish Community Center, and 3GNJ.
