The unique event marks the first time MDR presents an original work written specifically as a podcast.

Set in the late 19th century, as the Women’s Suffrage movement was gaining momentum, NOVEL tells the story a young woman who has been confined to an asylum by her husband for the crime of reading novels. She uses her wit and the books she loves to empower the women in the asylum, and to reach allies on the outside who can help her regain her freedom.

NOVEL arrives just in time for the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which was passed by Congress on June 4, 1919 and ratified into law on August 18,1920. Though historical, the themes of social justice and sisterhood will resonate with modern audiences.

The cast features guest actors Julia Coffey and Lynette Freeman joining MDR ensemble members Sebastian Arcelus, Jenny Bacon, Lucas Calhoun, Dwayne Clark, Brian Corrigan, Danielle Ferland, and Josephine Rose Roberts, with South Orange Middle School student Rowan Wechsler. Suzanne Agins directs, with live sound design by Shane Rettig. MDR’s Terrence Witter is stage manager.

This reading will present the pilot episode, “Sense and Sensibility,” followed by scenes from the second episode, “Frankenstein.”

This event is presented in association with Triple Birch Media (Steven Tabakin, Founder/Producer.
