Mike Kaplan Nonet: Duke Meets Monk

The Mike Kaplan Nonet combines the strength, cohesion, and varied tonal colors of a big band, with the spontaneity and flexibility of a small group. The Nonet features 6 horns out front, an intuitive rhythm section, and plays original arrangements in a variety of styles and genres all filtered through the 21st century jazz sensibilities of the leader and band members.

The Bickford Theatre's Summer Jazzfest kicks off with the Evan Sherman Big Band, a 16-piece ensemble of jazz veterans and New York's most dynamic young musicians. The big band has been featured at Jazz at Lincoln Center, Rainbow Room, Ginny’s Supper Club in Harlem, The Django in TriBeca, Lincoln Center’s Midsummer Night’s Swing, Caramoor Jazz Festival, SteelStacks (PA), and the Perth International Arts Festival (Australia). Sherman, a New Jersey native who started playing professionally at age 13, is a drummer and leader who has toured the world in the bands of Wynton & Branford Marsalis, Ron Carter, Roy Hargrove, Cyrus Chestnut, Dizzy Gillespie All-Stars and more. The versatile instrumentalists that make-up Amani will recreate the sound of Nat King Cole, who was arguable among the most famous entertainers in the 1950’s and 60’s. 

Grove Street Stompers, Thursday, August 1
Formed in 1959 by band leader and piano player Bill Dunham, this fabulous group’s repertoire includes Dixieland, New Orleans and swing styles with tunes made famous by such greats as Bix, Louies and Jelly Roll Morton.

Singer and comedienne JulieMAC returns to The Corner Bistro with her stellar MAC Trio every first and third Thursday of the month. Stop by for some great grub and music.
