Bright Star was inspired by a real event and is a sweeping tale of love and redemption set against the rich backdrop of the American South, in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina in the 1920s and ‘40s. The musical is was a continuation of their Grammy-winning collaboration on the 2013 bluegrass album, Love Has Come for You.

The musical tells the story of literary editor Alice Murphy meets a young soldier just home from World War II, he awakens her longing for the child she once lost. Haunted by their unique connection, Alice sets out on a journey to understand her past—and what she finds has the power to transform both of their lives.

Of the show, The New York Times declared "Bright Star beams nostalgia…bringing a fresh breeze from the South to the spring theater season.” They go on to note that “The musical is gentle-spirited, not gaudy, and moves with an easygoing grace where others prance and strut.”
