KAPLEN JCC FEATURES DAYLONG PROGRAMS FOR THE DIFFERENTLY-ABLED

Daylong Sunday Programs for People of All Ages who are Differently-Abled

WHERE: Kaplen JCC on the Palisades, 411 E. Clinton Ave., Tenafly

The Guttenberg Center for Special Services at the Kaplen JCC on the Palisades provides social, recreational, cultural and educational experiences in community settings, with appropriate supports, for children, teens and adults who are differently abled. The programs are designed to meet the varying needs of the participants and are offered in a nurturing environment that encourages everyone to reach their best potential. Programs focus on independent living skills, social and communication skills, as well as sports, recreation, art and music therapy and iPad technology.

To allow for greater participation, the Center offers all day, year-round programming on Sundays, where people of all ages and abilities can enjoy classes and programs and the company of their peers in a barrier-free, handicapped-accessible environment.

Sunday programs offered this fall will include:

2014-10-19 (70 of 148)SUNDAY FUNDAY!
This class develops socialization and communication skills through age-appropriate structured activities such as morning meeting, story time, imaginative play, snack and games. For ages 3-8.

WHEN: Meets for 13 Sundays, Sept 18- January 22, 10 am-12 pm.

 

SUNDAY SOCIAL SKILLS
This class develops and enhances pro-social skills and interactions for children with high functioning autism, including PDD/NOS, Asperger Syndrome and ADD/ADHD with their peers in a natural setting. For ages 5-8 and 8-12.

WHEN: AGES 5-8, 13 Sundays, Sept 18- Jan22, 10-12 pm
WHEN: AGES 7-10, 13 Sundays, Sept 18-Jan22 10:30 am-12:30 pm

SPORTS-A-RAMA
This Sunday class enables teens with sufficient self-help skills to independently participate in fitness, yoga, basketball and swim. For ages 13-21.

WHEN: Meets 13 Sundays, Sept 18- Jan22, 9:30 am-12:30 pm

TRANSITIONS – ON OUR OWN
This life skills training program is for teens and young adults with a focus on interacting with peers, developing pro-social behaviors, and independent living skills. For ages 14-21.

WHEN: 13 Sundays, Sept 18-Jan22 10 am-2:30 pm.

2014-10-19 (133 of 148)LIFE GROUP – LEARNING TO LIVE INDEPENDENTLY FOREVER
Adults learn life skills for independent living including travel skills, and money management, and appropriate social interactions are reinforced through a range of community based outings. Trips planned for fall include one on September 25 and November 13.

Monthly dances are also held with great DJ, snacks and cold beverages. Dances held on Saturday nights or Sundays. This fall, Saturday dances will be held from 7:30 – 10 pm on Sept 17, October 15, November 12 and Dec 17. Sunday dances will be held in the spring.

The Kaplen JCC on the Palisades is a qualified provider of the State of NJ Department of Human Services Division of Children & Families (DCF)/ PerformCare and the Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD). It accepts payments from other service agency providers as well as sending school districts.
