TIBETAN MONKS PAINT MANDALA @ RVCC THIS WEEK

They have arrived! The Mystical Arts of Tibet—the monks of the Drepung Loseling Monastery—have conducted the opening ceremony, outlined and begun to paint their mandala. They will be at it, through 5PM Friday, when they sweep it all away and disperse it in a closing ceremony that starts at 6PM. Endorsed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama as a means of promoting world peace and healing through sacred performing art, they have performed in many of America's greatest theaters and music halls. Join us in the days leading up to the performance to watch as the monks create a sand mandala. From all the artistic traditions of Tantric Buddhism, painting with colored sand ranks as one of the most unique and exquisite. In Tibetan this art is called dul-tson-kyil-khor, which literally means "mandala of colored powders." Millions of grains of sand are painstakingly laid into place on a flat platform over a period of days.
