KAPLEN JCC ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE AWARD

Kaplen JCC on the Palisades Now Accepting Applications for

2016 Abe Oster Holocaust Remembrance Award
For Bergen County High School Students, Grades 9 – 12

The Kaplen JCC on the Palisades is currently accepting submissions for the 2016 Abe Oster Holocaust Remembrance Award, a living memorial to the six million innocent Jewish victims of the Holocaust.  Established in 2005 to honor the memory of Abe Oster, who worked closely with his wife Ann to encourage young people to study the Holocaust, the goal of the annual contest is to encourage students to create works of art that demonstrates a personal, historical and moral understanding of the Shoah.  The contest is open to all high school students either residing in Bergen County or enrolled in a Bergen County public or private high school. Entries from students of all backgrounds are encouraged.

This year’s contest requires applicants to submit an original piece of artwork with a maximum size of 3 square feet that conveys the lessons the student has learned from his/her comprehensive study of the Holocaust and how those lessons may be applied to present communal or global issues.  All art forms will be accepted, including oil, acrylic and watercolor paintings, illustrations, mixed mediums, collage and sculpture. To be considered for the award, the art must be submitted with a completed application which can be found on the JCC website. Submissions must be received by the JCC no later than April 13, 2016.

Contest rules require each submission to be an original work, designed and created by the applicant, and be non-digital so it can be displayed as part of the JCC’s annual Yom Hashoah Commemoration. This year’s event will be held on Wednesday, May 4 from 7 —9 PM. Winning entries will be announced and acknowledged during the commemoration and their names will appear in the commemorative program. The winning artwork will also be featured and on the JCC website after the winners are announced. There will be a $1000 cash prize for first place; $500 cash prize for second place.
