The story, expanded from that of the concept album, centers on three disaffected young men, Johnny, Will, and Tunny. Johnny and Tunny flee a stifling suburban lifestyle and parental restrictions, while Will stays home to work out his relationship with his pregnant girlfriend, Heather. The former pair look for meaning in life and try out the freedom and excitement of the city. Tunny quickly gives up on life in the city, joins the military, and is shipped off to war. Johnny turns to drugs and finds a part of himself that he grows to dislike, has a relationship and experiences lost love. Director/Choreographer Starega states, “It's been an amazing journey discovering how a defining moment can influence an entire generation. Over history these have included Pearl Harbor, Vietnam, the AIDS Crisis and in the case of this story, 9/11. The parallels, while not always identical, ring true through the feelings of disconnection, patriotism, activism and a strong desire to feel important, to matter. As the characters say, "This is my rage. This is my love. This is my town. This is my city. This is my life."
The musical is directed and choreographed by Patrick Starega of Winfield Park, NJ and musical direction is by Bruce DeLaCruz of North Brunswick, NJ.
