MONDAY, JULY 20

The Jazz Workshop Faculty
featuring
Cecil Bridgewater

Opening night of the Summer Jazz Series features the Summer Jazz Workshop faculty, with Tim Newman on trombone, James Weidman on piano, Steve LaSpina on bass, and Winard Harper on drums. Joining the group is the Workshop's newest faculty member - Cecil Bridgewater, a veteran trumpeter, composer, and arranger who has been on the adjunct faculty of the WP Jazz Studies program for over 10 years. Bridgewater has played with and composed for Max Roach, Art Blakey, Dizzy Gillespie, and the Duke Ellington Orchestra, among others.

TUESDAY, JULY 21

The Warren Vaché Quartet

New Jersey native Warren Vaché's swinging cornet moves from the familiar to the unpredictable within the turn of a phrase. Through a synthesis of influences across the spectrum of jazz, Vaché has established an emotive style that resists classification. He was a member of the Benny Goodman Band, recorded and toured worldwide with players affiliated with the Concord record label, and has many album credits as a band leader.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 22

Dena DeRose and the WP Summer Jazz Orchestra

Dena DeRose's music is innovative, direct, and swinging. Like the iconic singer-pianists Nat King Cole and Shirley Horn, DeRose is recognized by peers and critics alike as among the best in both areas. She is joined on this performance by the Summer Jazz Orchestra, directed by WP music professor Stephen Marcone.

THURSDAY, JULY 23

The Steve LaSpina Quartet

Steve LaSpina is a longtime member of WP Jazz Studies program and the Summer Workshop. He is a skillful instrumentalist, known for his big sound, irrepressible swing, and exciting solo work. An in-demand sideman, he has worked with Stan Getz, Benny Carter, and Fred Hirsch, to name just a few. LaSpina appears here with his own quartet, comprised of some of New York's most creative musicians, including Billy Drews on saxes, Matthew Fries on piano, and WP alumnus Jon DiFiore on drums.

FRIDAY, JULY 24

THE HEATH BROTHERS QUINTET: SPECIAL REUNION CONCERT

with Tony Purrone

Jimmy Heath is the 2015 Summer Workshop Artist-in-Residence, National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master, and co-leader of the quintet. He has performed with just about every leading musician from the 1950s onward, and his compositions and arrangements have been in the regular repertoire of Clark Terry, James Moody, Chet Baker, Miles Davis, and numerous others. Co-leader Albert "Tootie" Heath will appear on drums, along with regular members Jeb Patton on piano and David Wong on bass. They are reunited with Tony Purrone on guitar, who was a member of the original Heath Brothers Band from 1978 until 1982 and also played with a "who's who" of jazz greats.
