Come join the Livingston Symphony Orchestra for “New Beginnings,” the third performance in their 2014-2015 concert series. Directed by Subito Music Publishing president and esteemed guest conductor, Stephen Culbertson, the program includes the Beethoven’s quintessential Fifth Symphony, as well as works by Elgar, Sibelius and Grammy Award-winning contemporary composer Robert Aldridge.

The Livingston Symphony Orchestra is one of the finest regional ensembles in the State of New Jersey.  With roots in suburban Essex County, the group has been delighting audiences since 1956 and continues to bring together the community of music lovers from far and wide to celebrate the greatest works ever composed. In what has been a special season for the orchestra, five conductor candidates have been chosen to program, rehearse and conduct their own individualized concerts as the orchestra selects a new director from amongst them.

culbertson rehearsalMr. Culbertson has been a strong advocate of American music as both publisher and conductor for more than 25 years. He has conducted over 35 orchestras, opera productions, and ballet companies from major to community levels both in the USA and abroad. His conducting career was honed at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland, under the tutelage of famed conducting teacher Jorma Panula. During a five year stay in Finland, Stephen also studied the works of Sibelius with Jussi Jalas, Sibelius’ son in law, and conducted most of Finland’s major ensembles. He was also able to introduce local Finnish audiences to American works by Copland, Beckler, Forsman and more, and create a six hour “History of American Music” broadcast for Finnish listeners. Locally, Culbertson has appeared regularly with the Montclair Chamber Society and Orchestra Society of Philadelphia, and served as conductor for the Bergen Philharmonic, Sussex County Orchestra, Maplewood SOMA, NJ Reading Orchestra, and Upper Montclair Presbyterian Church, as well as board and artistic director for Montclair’s Unity Concerts.
