Gothic organ music and silent horror films … a perfect Halloween mashup happening when UCPAC Film Series presents the original The Phantom of the Opera.

Master organist Bernie Anderson, Jr. will provide the live soundtrack on the theatre’s double-chambered, 500-pipe Mighty Wurlitzer organ, newly restored to its original Roaring Twenties glory.

Installed as a main attraction of the original Rahway Theatre in 1928, the UCPAC Mighty Wurlitzer has been recognized by the American Theatre Organ Society Registry as a Level 1 Quality Instrument designed to simulate the enveloping and diverse sounds of a live orchestra — the thundering THX experience of the pre-talkie era.

With a fast-paced 77-minute running time, The Phantom of the Opera has been ranked as #52 on Bravo’s list of 100 Scariest Movie Moments.

Bernie Anderson, Jr. is an acclaimed silent film music composer, organist and orchestrator. He has presented live accompaniments for silent films for more than two decades at numerous venues, including Radio City Music Hall. From 1990 to 2004, Anderson was house organist for the Union County Performing Arts Center.
