While the event itself is free to the public, all donations to The Little Read 2014 will benefit the Children’s Department of the Montclair Public Library.

The Montclair Public Library’s town-wide read-aloud “Little Read” marathon celebrates community and literacy. Scholastic has been a key partner and lead sponsor since the event’s inception in 2009.  “Scholastic’s mission of creating literacy-rich homes, schools and communities has made them a perfect partner for the library,” said David Hinkley, Montclair Public Library Director. “We appreciate their loyal support benefitting the library’s Children’s Department for many years.” Tom and Susan Dunn, Rosemary and Al Iversen, Baristanet and Little Daisy Bake Shop join Scholastic as contributing sponsors.

Dr. Penny MacCormack, Superintendent of Schools will be among the community members reading to preschool students from St. James Preschool, Lacordaire Academy, Union Congregational Nursery School and St. Cassian School at the Bellevue Avenue Library during the morning of October 17.  Dr. Renee E. Baskerville, MD, pediatrician and 4th Ward Councilwoman, will read aloud at the Montclair Child Development Center beginning at 2 PM. Joining her will be Montclair Public Library Foundation board members and library staff.

The Little Read continues that Friday evening with its traditional “Bedtime Stories” event at the Main Library, along with a milk and cookies reception from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Local authors Alexis Romay and Valerie Block will join Mayor Robert Jackson and Library Director David Hinkley for readings from the Big Red Chair.  “We are thrilled to welcome Mr. Romay and Ms. Block to the Big Red Chair for the first time and are especially excited that Mr. Romay, author of many Diego books, will read to the children in Spanish, said Jennifer Friedberg, MPL Foundation Board Member and Little Read Chairperson.
