Hey Bartender is a film that depicts the rebirth and resurgence of craft cocktail culture through the lives of two bartenders.

“New Brunswick has been at the forefront of cocktail culture in NJ. It’s only fitting that all of our great bars and bartenders come together to celebrate that. If you don’t know about the amazing culture of cocktails and hospitality in New Brunswick, here’s a great chance to discover it,” says Francis Schott, The Restaurant Guys.

Just before the screening, patrons can watch a local New Jersey bartender cocktail competition where barticipants— representing Stage Left, Catherine Lombardi, The Frog and The Peach, Due Mari, Steakhouse 85, Clydz, and Destination Dogswill craft their best libation using spirits from the William Grant & Sons portfolio of premium spirits.

The competition will be judged by Charlotte Voisey of William Grant & Sons, Jim Meehan of PDT, Steve Schneider of Employees Only, Steve “Carpi” Carpentieri of Dunville’s, and Douglas Tirola, director of Hey Bartender. The winner of the competition will be awarded with his/her own Hey Bartender moment: a video cocktail demonstration produced by Douglas Tirola that will be shared with the public via the film’s Facebook page.

Ticket holders for the cocktail competition will have the opportunity to sample the crafted cocktails from the competition’s barticipants. There will also be specialty cocktails available for sale at the State Theatre lobby bar.  There is no elevator access to the cocktail competition, stairs only. Accommodations will be made for people who cannot climb stairs.

Hey Bartender is a documentary that tells the story of how the renaissance of the bartender comes to be in the era of the craft cocktail. It focuses on two bartenders trying to achieve their dreams through the world of bartending. After being injured, a Marine turns his goals to becoming a rock star bartender at the best cocktail bar in the world. A former bank executive who bought the corner bar in his hometown struggles to keep it afloat in a community that no longer values a place where everyone knows your name.
