City of Silver and Gold showcases more than 100 objects drawn from the Museum’s holdings documenting the rise of the city’s precious metal industry from modest beginnings in the early 1800s to national prominence by the turn of the 20th century.

The Star Ledger and NJ.com are collaborating with the Newark Museum on an exciting event immediately following Super Bowl XLVIII Media Day activities in Newark. Former NFL players, including Pro Football Hall of Fame linebacker David Robinson, a New Jersey native who played for Coach Vince Lombardi and was a member of the 1967 Green Bay Packers championship team are expected to attend. Tickets go on sale on Friday, January 10. Please visit the Museum website to find out how you could purchase tickets.

In celebration of "The Year of the Horse," we are proud to present a performance of traditional lion dance and Chinese martial arts by the Wushu - Kung Fu Fitness Center of Livingston, New Jersey.

  • The Meaning of Color (Generation Fit Gallery)
    Our brains assign different meanings to color, which in turn affects our dietary choices. Discover how this information is manipulated subconsciously to guide our choices.
  • Now You See, Now You Don’t! (Dynamic Earth Gallery)
    By taking part in a camouflage game, discover how the animal kingdom uses this strategy to help species survive.
  • Color is in the Eye of the Beholder (Saturdays only)
    Explore how artists are masters at using color to shift a viewer’s mood, make you see a color that does not exist and mix color like a ninja.

Circuit Drawing

WHEN: Saturdays & Sundays, 1 & 3 PM
Recommended for children ages 6 to 9 (35 minutes) Explore the relationship between the Earth, Moon and Sun. With the help of Coyote and American Indian stories, you will learn about moon phases, eclipses, how the Sun shines, constellations and more!

New Jersey Hall of Fame
WHEN: January 15— 26, 2014
The New Jersey Hall of Fame mobile museum was designed by award winning architect Michael Graves and renowned museum exhibition designer Ralph Appelbaum. It is free and open to the public Wednesdays through Sundays, noon until 5 pm. The mobile museum features dramatic multimedia and interactive experiences, while recognizing New Jersey citizens such as Norman Schwartzkopf, Bruce Springsteen and Buzz Aldrin who have made invaluable contributions to society.

Ming to Modern: Elevating the Everyday in Chinese Art

To celebrate the 90th anniversary of the Museum’s first Chinese exhibition in 1923, this exhibition features more than 175 treasures of Chinese art acquired over the past century, many never before displayed to the public.


Seeing Beyond the Moment: The Photographic Legacy
and Gifts of George Tice

On view through February 9, 2014
Featuring more than two dozen photographs, this exhibition focuses on Tice’s multivalent career as a photographer, master printer and teacher, and as a major donor to the Newark Museum’s photography collection.

Generation Fit: Steps to a Healthier Lifestyle

This interactive family experience explores issues of nutrition and exercise, and provides an interactive "tool kit" for disease prevention and healthy behavior. The exhibit's interactive components, animation and exercise challenges help visitors appreciate that small incremental changes in good nutrition and activity can lead to a healthier lifestyle.
