Author's Note

Pirandello's short story had an undercurrent of unrequited passion that I found to be haunting. The inevitability of its outcome lent an air of classical tragedy to TERESA's fate, especially since it was a consequence of a tragically imposed flaw: the reticence to acknowledge her own needs as a woman in a fiercely patriarchal, church-dominated society, and conversely, because of these very powerful needs, the unwillingness to acknowledge the innate flaw in her husband, MARCELLO.
