Mark TwainJoin composer Robert W. Butts and librettist Jewel Seehaus-Fisher for a discussion and showing of the new historical opera Mark Twain and the General.

Based on the historical meeting between Mark Twain and Ulysses S. Grant, the opera explores Grant's struggle to write his book on the Civil War midst swirling financial and personal difficulties. Suffering from cancer, he and his wife fear he may die before finishing his work. Mark Twain steps in with a plan that inspires an American literary masterpiece.

The evening will feature a discussion by the composer and librettist, a chance to talk with some of the artists and a showing of the February 2013 production at NJIT featuring soprano Karole Lewis (Julia Grant), bass John Lamb (Ulysses S. Grant), Brian Jamieson (Mark Twain), Ira Barth (the Cook) and Anthony Shashaty, Douglas Anderson and Tom Loughman as the Veterans.
