Puppetry is an ancient art form that has transcended time and crossed cultural boundaries to entertain generations of children and adults. The Catskill Puppet Theater takes great pride in carrying on in the living tradition of the old traveling puppet troupes, bringing high quality children's theater to over 100,000 people each year.  Audiences will also have a chance to participate in a workshop where they can create a take-home puppet of their own after the show.

The Lion’s Whiskers is a delightful musical adaptation of a traditional Ethiopian folktale, featuring a charming cast of human characters as well as everyone’s favorite African animals. When lonely Minya marries a widowed man with a small son, she goes to a Wise Man for advice on winning the heart of the little boy. He tells her that she must first pluck three whiskers from a Wild Lion! In doing so she not only finds the courage to tame the lion, but also the secret to gaining the love of her new family. The show features a multitude of masks and with puppets of all sizes ranging from three quarter sized to life-sized to “gigantic” and is highlighted with shadow puppetry and original songs

Since 1979, John Potocnik and Carol Mandigo, co-founders of the Catskill Puppet Theater, have been touring internationally, enchanting young and old with their delightful musical productions. Combining backgrounds in art, music, drama and American folk culture they are one of the nation's finest touring companies, receiving accolades from such premiere venues as the Calgary, Winnepeg and Ottawa International Children's Festivals, The New England Puppetry and Family Theater Series, the New York State Museum's Kid's Series and hundreds of schools, fairs and festivals.

PUPPETRY WORKSHOP

After the show, children can participate in a workshop with the puppeteers creating their own puppets to take home and will learn how to us them behind a special shadow screen with the group. The workshop is available for an additional $18.50 a person, with a limit of 50 people.
