CRANFORD DRAMATIC CLUB SEEKS ACTORS FOR “OLIVER!”

WHEN: ADULTS: Wednesday, September 7, and Thursday, September 8, @ 7 PM; CHILDREN: Saturday, September 10, and Sunday, September 11, 2011 @ 2 PM

WHERE: Cranford Dramatic Club, 78 Winans Avenue, Cranford, NJ

Performance Dates: Fridays: Nov 4, 11 & 18 @ 8 PM, Saturdays: Nov 5, 12 & 19 @ 2 PM & 7 PM; Sundays: Nov 12 & 20 @ 2 PM

Seeking all ages, vocal types and physical types. All rehearsals and performances take place at CDC Theatre, Cranford, NJ.

ADULTS: Prepare a selection in the style of the show and bring sheet music in the appropriate key. An accompanist will be provided.
CHILDREN: All children will be asked to sing "Consider Yourself" from the show.

Character Breakdown:
ADULTS:

  • Fagin: Male (40-65), Baritone. Great Character Actor. A conniving career criminal, he takes in homeless boys and teaches them to pick pockets for him. He is the leader of Fagin’s gang - a band of London pick pockets and thieves.
  • Nancy: Female (20 - 40). Alto. Trusted and resourceful member of Fagin’s gang. Untidy and free in manner, but “there was something of the woman’s original nature left in her still.” A strong Singer / Dancer / Actress
  • Bill Sikes: Male (25 – 45). Baritone. Nancy’s brutal boyfriend, the “bad buy”. A ruthless felon associated with Fagin; he is violent and abusive, his anger likely to erupt at any moment.
  • Mr. Bumble: Male (35 - 55). Bari-Tenor. The parochial beadle. He oversees the operations of the Workhouse where Oliver lives as a child. He is a bully who thinks highly of his oratorial powers and his importance. Singer / Actor with a good sense of comic timing.
  • Widow Corney: Female (35-55) Soprano. The comic sidekick to Mr. Bumble. Matron of the workhouse. Singer / Actress with a good sense of comic timing.
  • Mr. Sowerberry: Male (40-60). Baritone. The undertaker, a classic Dickensian character (tall / thin). Comic Actor.
  • Mrs. Sowerberry: Female (40-60). Mezzo. The comic wife of Mr. Sowerberry.
  • Mr. Brownlow: Male (50-75). Non - singing. Oliver’s long lost relative.
  • Mrs. Bedwin: Female (35-50) Soprano. Mr. Brownlow’s friendly housekeeper.
  • Dr. Grimwig: Male (40-50). Non-singing. Doctor.
  • Old Sally: (50-75) Non-singing. An old beggar woman.
  • Ensemble: Women and Men - all ages and voice types to play various roles, including workhouse workers, thieves, London Merchants, Street vendors, Bar Keeps, Policemen, etc.
TEEN ROLES: (must appear 15 - 20)
  • Bet: Female, Alto. Nancy’s Friend, one of Fagin’s former pickpockets.
  • Charlotte: Female. Non-singing. The Sowerberry’s daughter.
  • Noah: Male. Non-singing. Undertaker’s apprentice.
CHILDREN’S ROLES: (Must appear 8 - 17)
  • Oliver Twist: Boy Soprano. The Protagonist of the story. He is a lonely orphan boy born in the workhouse. Must have strong ability to convey real emotions.
  • Artful Dodger: Tenor. A charming, young con-man and protégé of Fagin; older than the other boy’s in Fagin’s Gang. Actor / Singer with strong dance skills and a dynamic stage presence.
  • Charlie Bates: Dodger’s sidekick and member of Fagin’s Gang (the 2nd in command).
  • B: Boys and Girls to portray member of the Workhouse, Fagin's Gang, Street Vendors, etc.
