FILM, TELEVISION AND BROADWAY STAR JUDD HIRSCH DIRECTS AND STARS IN SURFLIGHT THEATRE’S “ART”

We’ve all been there … you’re standing in a gallery or a museum, staring at a piece of ‘modern’ art, shaking your head, thinking how your three-year old daughter could have pulled off a better painting using just her toes – while the person next to you is awestruck at its genius and beauty. Well, what do you do when that person is your best friend … or worse, when that friend has just spent a small fortune to own this painting and asks your opinion?

NINETY MINUTES OF FEROCIOUS FUN!

Surflight Theatre, under the leadership of Producing Artistic Director Roy Miller and Executive Producer Timothy Laczynski, continues its 2011 season with Yasmina Reza’s award-winning comedy ART.  This smart and funny play explores the value and meaning of both friendship and art when a (nearly) all-white painting ignites an escalating argument among three men, threatening to destroy their long friendship.

Judd HirschDirected by and starring Academy Award-nominated, Emmy and two-time Tony-winning actor (Numb3rs, Taxi, Ordinary People, A Beautiful Mind, I’m Not Rappaport, and Conversations with My Father) Judd Hirsch (as Marc), ART also starsBroadway's John Procaccino (Conversations With My Father, ART) as Serge and Danton Stone (National Tour of The Exhonerated) as Yvan.

ART,” says Producing Artistic Director Roy Miller “is the kind of play I love—funny, smart, and wonderfully human. And about something all of us can relate to: friendship. As the saying goes, art imitates life, and I am grateful to my good friend and colleague [Judd] for revisiting one of his favorite Broadway roles at Surflight for our audiences to experience and enjoy." Miller and Hirsch first met during the 2002 Broadway revival of I'm Not Rappaport, which Miller produced and Hirsch recreated his Tony award-winning role from the original 1985 production.

The creative team includes scenic designer/technical director Andrew Riedemann, costume coordinator Caitlin Reed, lighting designer Marciel Greene and sound designer Nevin Steinberg. Marlene Mancini is the production stage manager.

Since its premiere in 1995 in Paris, ART has been performed worldwide and translated in over 30 languages. Reza holds the record for the first woman to win the Tony Award for Best Play twice—ART in 1998 and God of Carnage (recently produced by George Street Playhouse in New Brunswick) in 2009. Her other works include The Unexpected Man and Life (x) 3

Please note that ART contains strong language and adult situations.
