Come out and cheer on the high school regional winners competing for the title of New Jersey Poetry Out Loud State Champion and the chance to represent New Jersey at the Poetry Out Loud National Finals in Washington, D.C. (2009-2010 State Finalists to left) Poetry Out Loud is a national poetry recitation contest in which students from all over the country memorize and perform great works of classical and contemporary poetry.Thank you to the 86 public, private, and parochial schools, 500 teachers, and 16,000 high school students who participated in this year's NJ Poetry Out Loud! It's now time to gear up for the NJPOL State Finals on March 17 and watch the eight students who made it through the Regional Contests compete for the title of State Champion. |
Poetry Out Loud invites the dynamic aspects of slam poetry, spoken word and theater into the English class (as well as Drama, Forensics, and other appropriate classes). The National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation have partnered with State Arts Agencies, the New Jersey State Council on the Arts among them, to support the expansion of Poetry Out Loud, which encourages the nation's youth to learn about great poetry through memorization and performance. This exciting program, now in its sixth year, helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence and learn about their literary heritage.
