RivoRevalation KR About Shirley Winthrope Rivo
Growing up during the depression in Toronto, Canada, Shirley Winthrope Rivo always knew she wanted to be an artist, and has painted throughout her life. Her paintings and photographs have been shown in many group and one-woman shows, and are in the collections of The Statue of Liberty Museum, the Morris Museum, New York Botanical Gardens, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Yankee Stadium, Johnson & Johnson and other corporate and private collections.

Mrs. Rivo cites the artists Corot, Turner, Constable, Frederic Church and the Hudson River School artists as influences on her work, much of which is landscapes and seascapes.

Rivo Cerebral KR Her interested in photography as an artistic medium came later, as she was carrying a camera with her constantly to take photographs as a reference for her paintings. The 1995 photograph (right) Cerebral View Statue of Liberty is taken from inside the statue, showing the structure of the beams inside the statue’s head, rather than the crowned Lady Liberty which viewers are familiar with.

Mrs. Rivo moved to New Jersey with her family in the 1960’s and lived in Berkeley Heights until a recent move to Murray Hill. She earned a BA and  MA in Fine Arts from Kean University. Mrs. Rivo worked closely for several years with the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey  in Summit, serving as Program Chairperson and Chairperson of Special Events.
