OCTOBER DOINGS @ THE WEST ORANGE PUBLIC LIBRARY

Once again, a reminder that your local public library is a great place for free programs for the entire family. I can’t cover all the municipal libraries, but my own, West Orange Public Library, is an example of what’s to be found in these sacred places! You can sign up online by clicking the text highlighted in purple.

lipmanMeet Author Elinor Lipman at the Library
Wednesday, October 27, at 7 PM

Award-winning author Elinor Lipman will visit the WO Library to discuss her latest book, The Family Man, the charming and comedic story of successful, but lonely, lawyer Henry Archer. Henry's life is turned upside down when his stepdaughter from a long ago ill-advised marriage re-enters his life.

Jane Vandenburgh of The Boston Globe said "Lipman's characters are keenly observant. What they observe is a harmony that feels almost subversive, that things not only can turn out well, that they probably will, that life can—at least at certain moments—indeed feel charmed."

Ms. Lipman is the author of nine novels and a short story collection.  Her novel Then She Found Me was adapted for the big screen in 2008, starring Colin Firth and Bette Midler. Ms. Lipman will hold the 2011-12 Elizabeth Drew Chair in Creative Writing at Smith College.

Ms. Lipman's visit is funded by a donation from Mantell family. Florence B. Mantell was a well-loved employee of the Library for 21 years. An avid reader, Mrs. Mantell took special pleasure in bringing readers of all ages together with the books she thought they would enjoy.  After her retirement in 1970, she was a frequent visitor to the Library and participated in the book discussion group.  When Mrs. Mantell could no longer visit the Library, she called upon the Library's home delivery service and continued to indulge her passion for books.  This program is presented in memory of Florence B. Mantell.
