Fans of television’s Modern Family will love THE SURROGATE, by Patricia Cotter, which will be the final presentation of the 2016 Women Playwrights Series at the Centenary Stage Company.

A smart, funny play about what we can ask of our friends, our parents and spouses, and whether we’ll get any of our important life decisions right, THE SURROGATE was a runner up in the O’Neill National Playwrights Conference this year.

Bio_photo Patricia Cotter (3)Emmy Award- and Ovation Award-winning playwright, Patricia Cotter is the recipient of the American Academy of Arts Letters, Richard Rodgers Award for musical theater.  Her plays include RULES OF COMEDY -  Humana Festival of New American Plays, 2015; THE ANTHROPOLOGY SECTION (2015), and RULES OF COMEDY (2014) performed by The Actors Theatre of Louisville .   Her musicals (librettist/adaptations) include ROCKET SCIENCE: A MUSICAL  and THE BREAK UP NOTEBOOK: A MUSICAL. Cotter adapted MULAN, JR. for Disney Theatrical.  She won The LA Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Production  in 2013 for JUSTIN LOVE. She is currently writing a new musical with composer Lori Scarlett, LADYKILLERS, which they developed at the Rhinebeck Writer’s Retreat.  She is a member of the Playground Writers Pool, where she received the 2014 June Anne Baker Prize and commission which honors the top female playwright representing a gifted new comedic or political voice for the stage.  She is a 2016 Playwrights Foundation Resident Playwright.

THE SURROGATE will be directed by Molly Noble.  Noble is a company member of Playground – The Bay Area’s Leading Playwright Incubator, and also serves on the Theatre faculty at College of Marin Fine Arts.   She is the founder of  Porchlight Theatre Company,  which was a beloved and award-winning theatre company located in Marin in the San Francisco Bay Area.

The CSC Women Playwrights Series, led by Catherine Rust, celebrates its 25th year in 2016, having featured the work of more than 60 emerging playwrights in the developmental WPS process, and having taken 15 plays to full production from the series, including “The English Bride” by Lucile Lichtblau, which transferred from CSC to New York City in 2013.   The program offers playwrights the opportunity to work with professional actors and directors in a workshop rehearsal process, and to hear their work in front of a live audience – a critical part of the development process.  Lively talk-backs with the playwright and cast follow each presentation, and one play is selected each year as the winner of the Susan Glaspell Award, which promises a full production in the main-stage season at CSC.

The WPS receives support from the Zonta Club of Morristown, the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, The Deborah Little Memorial Fund, the NJ State Council on the Arts, The Blanche and Irving Laurie Foundation and season sponsor Heath Village.

STAGED READING & DISCUSSION @ NJPAC OF A PLAY ABOUT TABOO OF MENTAL ILLNESS

The public dialogue which follows is free and open to the public. Panelists include White, mental health practitioner and advocate Tom Pyle, and medical humanities scholars Nancy Gross and Suzanne McConnell.

New Jersey Theatre Alliance in partnership with the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) and Newark Celebration 350, invites the public to a reading and discussion of David Lee White’s play-in-progress, Sanism, one of three new plays by New Jersey playwrights about New Jersey issues commissioned through the NJPAC Stage Exchange program in 2016.

A docu-play based on interviews with people who suffer from mental illness, Sanism tells the story of a woman whose psychotic break and odyssey through the mental healthcare maze lead to a reunion with old high-school friends and the revelation of old secrets.

After a reading of the script by professional actors, the public is invited to lend their voices to a dialogue with Mr. White (pictured above) and three panelists about how the play aligns with real-life experience.

“It’s really important for me to hear what you think,” said White. “This is a very charged topic, the topic of mental illness and mental health treatment, and if anyone has any experience with that at all—mental health professionals or if you have anyone in your family who is affected—I would really love for you to come out and give me your input.”

David Lee White is the Associate Artistic Director and Resident Playwright at Passage Theatre Company in Trenton, which has agreed to launch a full-scale production of Sanism when it is completed in 2017. White has written many plays that have appeared on New York and New Jersey stages, and is known for conducting interviews with Trenton residents on the topics of race, identity, and history to inform his plays.

About NJPAC Stage Exchange: The Commissions
Now in its second season, NJPAC Stage Exchange: The Commissions (NJStageX) is collaborating with three professional New Jersey theatres to commission and produce new plays by a talented trio of Garden State playwrights. Following their staged readings at NJPAC in the spring of 2016, each new work will receive a full production during the 2016-17 season at the partner theatres. The selected playwrights and theaters include David Lee White and Passage Theatre Company (Trenton); Nikkole Salter and Luna Stage Company (West Orange); and Chisa Hutchinson and Writers Theatre of New Jersey (Madison).  Each play will have a staged reading at NJPAC and then receive a world premiere at its co-commissioning theater during the 2016-17 season.

There is a strong community engagement component to NJStageX with proceeds from the staged readings going to New Jersey-based non-profit organizations and institutions whose missions complement themes and issues addressed in the plays. Each reading will be followed by a free symposium, made possible by a generous grant from the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, where the playwright will be joined on stage by a panel of academics, activists and professionals to discuss the issues in the play.

Bax AlessioThe JCC Thurnauer School of Music is celebrating 32 years of magnificent music education on Monday, May 2, 7:00 pm,  with its annual Gift of Music Gala Benefit. The concert will feature world-renowned violinist Joshua Bell joined by pianist Alessio Bax (left) and violinist Sharon Roffman (below, left) plus Thurnauer’s outstanding student ensembles in an evening of spellbinding musical entertainment.

This year’s event will also honor Thurnauer’s founding director, Dorothy Kaplan Roffman, on her 75th birthday. Through Dorothy’s vision, wisdom, leadership and generosity, the school has provided thousands of individuals – from Roffman, Sharon (1)infants to adults – with the highest quality music education. Through her guidance and musicianship, Thurnauer has grown to serve nearly 6,000 individuals annually, transforming the lives of its students, families and concertgoers through a rich tapestry of lessons, ensembles, classes, concerts, performance opportunities and master classes with top professional artists.

“The goal of our gala each year is to celebrate the remarkable achievements of our students, while raising critical scholarship funds for children in our community who wish to study music, but whose families lack the financial resources,” says Ms. Roffman.

Since the school’s inception, it has awarded more than $2.6 million in need-based scholarships. Currently, nearly 25% of its student body receives financial assistance. The school has also sustained an 18-year “Music Discovery Partnership” with the Englewood Public School District, providing a high-quality, after-school music education to underserved children.

The Gift of Music was established by Drs. Joan and Alan Handler to bring the joys of music-making to a broad student population in a nurturing and supportive environment. This year’s concert marks its 26th Anniversary.

Joshua Bell is known worldwide for technical skill and versatility in both classical and pop music, making him one of the most successful contemporary violinists. He made his orchestral debut at age 14 with the Philadelphia Orchestra—becoming the orchestra's youngest-ever soloist—and made his first recording at age 18.  Since then, Bell has recorded more than 40 works, garnering Grammy, Mercury, Gramophone and Echo Klassik awards in the process, along with the prestigious Avery Fisher Prize. Bell has enjoyed television appearances ranging from The Tonight Show to CBS Sunday Morning to 60 Minutes. He has appeared six times on Live From Lincoln Center and is the subject of an HBO documentary. He has numerous film credits as well, including performing the soundtrack for The Red Violin, appearing in the documentary Orchestra of Exiles and acting in episodes of Amazon’s original series Mozart in the Jungle. Convinced of the value of music as an educational tool, Bell has devoted himself to several charitable causes, including Education Through Music, which places instruments in the hands of thousands of kids in America’s inner cities. Bell serves on the Artist Committee of the Kennedy Center and the Board of Directors of the New York Philharmonic and Education Through Music. He performs on the 1713 Huberman Stradivarius violin.

Roffman, Dorothy (6)As Founding Director of the Thurnauer School of Music in 1984, Dorothy Kaplan Roffman (right) has always been passionate about the positive influence that an outstanding music school can have on its community. She studied with Christine Dethier, Raphael Bronstein and Ivan Galamian and has more than fifty years of expertise teaching young violinists. Dorothy holds a BA from the University of Rochester and the Eastman School of Music and an MA in Musicology from Columbia. She was a member of the American Symphony Orchestra under Leopold Stokowski and a member of the Music Department faculty at SUNY Stony Brook. Mrs. Roffman studied Suzuki pedagogy with Shinichi Suzuki in the United States and Japan and developed Suzuki programs at the Harlem School of the Arts, the Lighthouse School of Music, and the Manhattan School of Music, where she was a faculty member for over thirty years. She received an award for Distinguished Service from the New Jersey chapter of the American String Teachers Association. In 2013, she was a recipient of a Milestone Certificate of Appreciation from the National Guild for Community Arts Education. Her students have performed at Merkin Hall, Lincoln Center, and Carnegie Hall, and have made TV appearances on Sesame Street and in Itzhak Perlman’s Fiddling for the Future, as seen on PBS. Many of her students have gone on to teach and perform as soloists and in orchestras worldwide, spreading their love of music to people around the globe.

The JCC Thurnauer School of Music has been named a Major Arts Institution by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. Serving over 500 students from infancy through adulthood, it offers a comprehensive program similar to the finest pre-college conservatories. The Banks family is in need of a serious attitude adjustment. Enter Mary Poppins, the positively perfect nanny, and life is about to get more lively, especially for gloomy siblings Jane and Michael. The Yardley Players is proud to present the “Mary Poppins” musical on stage at Mercer County Community College’s (MCCC’s) Kelsey Theatre in April over three weekends.

Based on the books by P.L. Travers and the 1964 Disney film starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, "Mary Poppins" is the story of a nanny who knows how to mix just the right amount of common sense, magic and a spoonful of sugar to help a family rediscover its joy. Along the way, Mary introduces the children to her fascinating collection of friends – delightful shopkeepers, Bert and his dancing chimney sweep pals, and an array of other colorful characters. For three days in May of 1903, President Teddy Roosevelt and the naturalist John Muir camped alone together in the Yosemite. One expected to be paid homage, revered for his accomplishments, and praised for his wilderness prowess. The other desired to have his voice heard, his philosophy followed, and his wisdom sought. The problem was, both men wanted to do all the talking. A complex look at the ongoing battle over what do with our public lands told through the unique wit and whimsy of Luna favorite Ben Clawson (Tilt the Unlit Candle, The Dangers of Electric Lighting, and The High Water Mark).

When Rachel's anti-Native mascot activism crosses the legal line, her aunt comes up with a sure-fire way to teach her a valuable lesson about accountability. But when Rachel's punishment creates an opportunity to fulfill her original mission, she must decide whether or not her agenda is worth a new sacrifice. Indian Head gives us a window into the perspective of a young Lenape girl as she grapples with the cost of reclaiming dignity.

Paralyzed in the car accident that claimed her mother's life, 17-year-old Ellen is determined to experience all her teenage years have to offer. But when the past comes knocking on the door-in the form of Ellen's brother-her small family's delicate balance is upended. In a home awash with anger, guilt, and Ellen's raging hormones, Tranquil is a raw exploration of one shattered family striving to be whole again.

  • Under 30 Pass
    We want you to become a life-long Luna fan, so we're offering this special pass to young theater goers—if you are under 30 it's just $50 for all four shows. That's only $12.50 per show—the same as a movie ticket to see professional live theatre.
