Bergen Performing Arts Center launched a partnership with the Westfield Garden State Plaza to present free family events a year ago, kicking it off on April 17, 2019 with a special appearance by beloved comedian Vic Dibitetto. The mall may be closed for now, but that hasn’t stopped the show from going on.

WHERE:  Westfield Garden State Plaza Facebook page

DIETRICH streams to benefit nonprofit organizations as ground-breaking and unstoppable as play’s unforgettable namesake

DIETRICH, an acclaimed one-woman play that brings iconic German actress Marlene Dietrich to life, will stream to help raise money for important causes. A one-minute trailer can be viewed at http://www.dietrichplay.com.

WHEN: Sunday, May 3, 1 PM; 7 PM; 10 PM
HOW TO WATCH
: viewers can watch at http://www.dietrichplay.com
ADMISSION:  Each performance is free, however a donation to one of five charitable causes is requested.

Contributions can be made directly to each individual charity, whose links are live on the DIETRICH website now and can be accessed below.

The benefitting causes were selected by producers due to the impact they are having in their communities, across the country, and around the world. They are:

1. Operation Warrior Shield, which provides comprehensive support programs for service members, veterans, first responders and their families that are focused on transition, health and wellness, employment, prevention of homelessness, peer engagement, and connections to community resources. https://operationwarriorshield.com/

2. Destiny Rescue, which rescues children from sex trafficking. https://www.destinyrescue.org/us/

3. National Meningitis Association, which works to protect families from the potentially devastating effects of meningococcal disease. https://www.nmaus.org

4. The Lucky Cat Rescue, a local rescue group that works to save stray cats and kittens in New Jersey. https://www.theluckycatrescue.org/

5. Woodstock Museum, which works to gather, display, disseminate, and develop the concept of Woodstock, encompassing the culture and history of a living colony of the arts, and much more. http://woodstockmuseum.com

Not only will viewers get to donate to great causes but they can enjoy the DIETRICH experience from their living rooms on the anniversary of this historic day in her life.

Sixty years ago—on May 3rd, 1960—Dietrich returned to the Berlin stage for the first time since fleeing the Hitler regime in the late1930’s. Inside her dressing room at the Tatiana Palast Theatre, Dietrich weighs whether or not to go through with the live performance despite threats on her life by Nazi sympathizers who resented her for having spent much of World War II entertaining American soldiers on the front lines. To them, Dietrich is a turncoat; a traitor who deserves to be shot and killed on stage.

Starring actress Cindy Marinangel, accompanied by musical director/pianist Russell Daisey, and written by playwright Willard Manus, DIETRICH (formerly known as Marlene) celebrated its world premiere at the Brickhouse Theatre in Los Angeles (produced by Write Act Rep and John Lant), debuted in New York in the New York Theatre Festival’s annual Winterfest, was chosen as a finalist in the storied New York New Works Theater Festival, enjoyed an exclusive performance in association with Hudson Theatre Works, and had a limited, special engagement Off-Broadway at the Triad Theater.

Marinangel is an international entertainer, a Lifetime Member of The Actors Studio and a graduate of the Chicago Second City Conservatory. She is an avid ballroom dancer and animal rights activist. Learn more at cindymarinangel.com.

Daisey is an internationally acclaimed pianist, singer and songwriter. He’s performed at The First Hiroshima International Peace Summit (onstage with the Dalai Lama); the Palais des Congres in Paris; before President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton; and Nobel Peace Prize Laureates Ellie Wiesel, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Betty Williams.

Manus is a playwright, journalist and novelist. He is a member of the Playwright/Directors unit of The Actors Studio. His most recent plays are “Joe and Marilyn: A Love Story,” “Frank and Ava” (now a motion picture) and “Who Killed Comrade Rabbit?”

For her part, Dietrich was frequently honored for her work for improving morale on the front lines during WWII. She earned the U.S. Medal of Freedom and the French Legion d'Honneur. The Kingdom of Belgium named Dietrich a Knight of the Order of Leopold. In 1999, the American Film Institute named Dietrich the ninth-greatest female star of classic Hollywood cinema.

West Orange Arts Council Showcases Advanced Placement Studio Art Students in First Virtual Art Exhibit

The West Orange High School Virtual Exhibit at WOArts.org

Through an exciting partnership with the Visual and Performing Arts Program at West Orange High School (WOHS), the West Orange Arts Center’s (WOAC) latest show features rising stars of our arts community.

The exhibit includes the work of the Advanced Placement (AP) Studio Art Juniors and Seniors. Senior artists include: Brandon Andrade, Olivia Callender, Ruth Donagher, Tricia Garchitorena, Christina Gilio-Malabre, Cassidy Joyce, Jason Latchman, and Jack Mault.

Access the exhibit HERE.

To participate in AP Studio Art, students are required to complete a one-semester foundation course in studio art before proceeding to advanced studies like advanced drawing, design, painting, graphics and sculpture. After completing demanding advanced courses, juniors and seniors may enroll and can produce portfolios for college admission and earn up to six advanced placement college credits.

The community is invited to visit the virtual exhibit, which includes images of the work along with artist's statements and take the opportunity to provide feedback to the students.

The show was installed on March 8 by the students and shortly after the West Orange Arts Center closed, adjusting its programming until further notice due to the coronavirus pandemic. On a swift pivot, WOAC Vice-Chair Carol Black-Lemon and Advanced Placement Studio Art teacher Heather Young worked to assemble the virtual exhibit experience.

"Even though we are closed to the public, we wanted to continue our mission to aspire and support the arts in our community, and what better way to do that then by acknowledging these talented young artists," said Black-Lemon.  Young concurs "Although the students did not get their big reception, in light of the situation, this is a very exciting alternative." This is the fourth year the show is being coordinated by WOAC Board Members Lisa Suss and Frank Niccoletti.

WOAC is currently developing additional virtual opportunities to stay connected and keep the arts alive. Most recently the WOAC partnered with the West Orange Environmental Commission and Open Space Commission and coordinated by Councilwoman Susan McCartney to "Celebrate Earth Day, the Social Distancing Way" with an Art In Nature Community Photography Campaign. The work is on view on Facebook. The striking images came from far (Italy) and near (West Orange and surrounding community).

Access the Earth Day exhibit HERE.

This program is made possible in part by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts and administered by the Essex County Division of Cultural and Historic Affairs.  For more information, visit www.woarts.org

SONGWRITERS IN MUFTI THEME ANNOUNCED

Good Morning, Songwriters!

Welcome to Week 1 of Songwriters in Mufti!

This week, to start things off, we're going to start with something about...well, about US.

Imagine a musical about The York. Need some history? Check out our website: (Hint:This was our 50th Anniversary Season!)

Now that you've imagined a musical about The York, write us a song from that musical. Is it the opening number? An "I Want" song? A patter song inspired by Jim Morgan's infamous curtain speech? That's up to you! Feel free to not stick totally to the facts—we don't mind a little artistic license.

Send a recording of your song (no parodies, please—at least not this time around) to songwritersinmufti@yorktheatre.org by 8:00 PM (EST) on Friday, May 1st! We'd prefer video recordings, but if that's not in the cards, we'll accept audio recordings, too. If possible, please send files via Dropbox or similar service. Sheet music is not necessary.

If you've got any further questions, email us at songwritersinmufti@yorktheatre.org, and we'll get back to you as quickly as possible.

We can't wait to see and hear your work!

All best,

Seth Christenfeld, Literary Manager

‘Dancing Through Distancing’ Free Access Virtual Dance Workshops For Students of All Ages

DANCING THROUGH DISTANCING

WHERE: Workshops  and information about AXCBT can be found at www.axelrodartscenter.com or www.axcbt.org

The Axelrod Contemporary Ballet Theater (AXCBT), part of the Axelrod
Performing Arts Center of Deal Park, New Jersey, has been meeting a desired community need by providing a syllabus of multi-faceted, free-of-charge virtual  dance and theater-arts workshops in response to the national “Stay at Home order” beginning in March.

Since that time, AXCBT has enjoyed an impressive attendance and garnered thankful, rave reviews from students and parents. For the program’s launch, Axelrod Contemporary Ballet Theater’s director and choreographer, Gabriel Chajnik, presented his first Advanced Ballet Workshop online (March 27th) with students not only from New Jersey but all over the nation—and they have been ‘tuning in’ and dancing along ever since.

Renowned dance professionals joining Chajnik in the company’s mission to offer ‘dancing through distancing’ include Michael Trusnovec of famed Paul Taylor Dance Company—hailed by The New York Times as “one of the world’s most luminous dancers,” Dylan Pearce, assistant choreographer of Radio City Music Hall’s Christmas Spectacular, Gabriela Soto who is featured as a ‘Shark Girl’ in Stephen Spielberg's highly anticipated WEST SIDE ST ORY, and Jessica Sgambelluri of Martha Graham and José Limón Dance Companies. Perhaps even more impressive than the credentials of these heralded instructors is the fact that they have donated their time and talents as a way for the Axelrod Performing Arts Center and AXCBT to give back during these difficult times.

AXCBT ’s staff also enjoys a wide range of talented featured performers and instructors, including Tuyana Balzhieva of the Moscow and Roxey Ballet companies; Lindsay Jorgensen and Olivia Miranda, both recent graduates of the  Ailey/Fordham’s dance program; Wendy Roman, who teaches a range of classes from preschool movement for beginners to triple threat musical theater for intermediate students; and Thomas Ryan Ward (also Fordham University educated) who has been inspiring students to explore poetry creation and combine it with dance, as well as teaching acting for dancers.

Axelrod Performing Arts Center’s board members and staff said, “The positive feedback and glowing reviews regarding our virtual workshops these past weeks ha ve been exciting and rewarding. Seeing the faces of our talented students beam as they ‘dance through distancing’ is completely heartwarming. It is our pleasure to continue providing high-quality instruction and impeccable guest artists for students and adults hungry for arts-based education.”
