Art and engineering, while seeming to exist in opposite fields of practice and study, inform each other all the time, and some would argue are at their height when created in consideration of the other. For the third in a series of annual STEAM–related (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) shows, the West Windsor Arts Center is pleased to present an exhibition [sin ‘Thedik] Landscape merging these disciplines. The exhibition is curated by Stass Shpanin, Prof. of Art at Rutgers University–Camden.

[sin ‘Thedik] Landscape is a survey exhibition of American artists focused on the creation of new synthetic nature that is a by-product of daring artistic endeavors and new technological advancements. The artists include David Bruce, Elizabeth Demaray, Vita Eruhimovitz, Matt Neff, Michael Rees, Tim Rusterholz, Orkan Telhan, and Victoria Vesna.

For the exhibition, artists David Bruce and Tim Rusterholz have created a new site-specific installation of the digitally “digested” landscape. Recording 3-D scans of a mountain; these adventurous artists digitally process received data and fabricate a monumental physical formation printed by a robot. Artists Vita Eruhimovitz and Michael Rees work with augmented reality, visible when mobile-device screens hit the coded images inside of their artworks. Vita Eruhimovitz’s group of abstract paintings blends physical objects and digital illusions. Michael Rees’ work creates intriguing illusions of animated animals overplayed by digital prints synthesizing objects, perceptions, and reality.

Victoria Vesna, one of the leading figures in digital media art, presents her most recent project, “Noise Aquarium.” This project spotlights animated and interactive 3D-models of diverse plankton spectrum obtained with scientific imaging techniques. Artist Elizabeth Demaray is featured with her “PandoraBird” project, an interactive installation that uses computer vision and interactive software to track and then play the music choices made by wild songbirds. Orkan Telhan and Matt Neff exhibit their innovative project "The Eventual," that combines traditional screen-printing with synthetic biology. It is designed as a stand-alone microbial battery that uses bacteria to grow electricity to power up an image printed with electroluminescent inks.

Support for this program is provided by NRG Energy.
