FREE 1-HOUR EXPRESSIVE WRITING SESSION MONDAY WITH DEB COOPERMAN

Image may contain: text

“I had dinner with some friends last night and we couldn't stop talking about all the craziness going on re: Kavanaugh and the circus surrounding it.

“And since posts on social media tell me we are not alone, I thought a free expressive writing session might just be in order.

“So join me on Monday at 4:30pm ET for a hour of getting some of this stuff in your head out on the page. No charge.

“You won't be asked to share your work, and we won't be processing the specifics of what we've written with each other. You'll simply have dedicated space, thoughtful prompts, encouragement from me, and the magic energy of a group of other people joined together to process the shit out of their stuff.

THE SESSION IS FREE, but registration is required. There won't be a sales pitch, and there won't be any sign-up-for-my-email-list pressure.

“Go here to register and get the scoops on how to join in.

New York-based Jazz trumpeter & singer Benny Benack III has been hailed by the New York Times as "a charismatic young trumpeter who maintains an earnest sideline as a singer", Benack has a knack for delighting audiences with panache, in the spirit of classic crooners like Sinatra & Mel Tormé, with a nod to legendary trumpet showmen Louis Armstrong & Dizzy Gillespie. The Hammond Groovers - Antonio, Daniele & Elio are the go to jazz cats when American musicians in Italy are looking to swing! They were performed for us last year with the Landham brothers. The Groovers are only in the States for a short time and we're thrilled to have them back in New Brunswick.

As the tiny African nation of Malawi erupts in riots around them, American aid workers Jack and Ericka take shelter in the storage room of a struggling NGO. Half a world away, Malawian student Gilbert and his gay co-worker Chad begin another day in the back room of a Manhattan florist. This powerful new play explores the challenges of international aid across interpersonal borders and how we bridge seemingly impossible cultural divides.

MEET THE CAST

David Gow

"My character grows a lot in his awareness of suffering--that he is not isolated in his, everyone has suffering. And when you aren’t shut off to the world you see everyone else’s, and often theirs is much more significant.”

Kevis Hillocks

"I may not agree with Gilbert's stance on homosexuality, but it is what he's been taught and believes to be absolute, that homosexuality is a sin. Pirira shows that instead of quickly judging a person we should try to unpack the root of their belief... while it may be hard to change a person's belief, we get one step closer to understanding why once we share."

John P. Keller

"One of the things I love most about theatre is its ability to ask questions. Good theatre doesn't present easy answers but asks us to wrestle with difficult questions. Each character in Pirira is on a journey--we see what motivates them, what terrifies them, what inspires them, what angers them, and what keeps them moving forward."

Naja Selby-Morton

"What’s particularly relevant about Pirira, and why I’m so excited to play the role of Ericka, is the national dialogue developing around sexual assault, the meaning of consent, and the ways in which women and girls around the globe (as well as men and boys) have endured violation under the 'acceptable' standards of male culture."

WHERE
: ACL Gallery, 2130 Town Center Way (enter on Carillon Circle)

One of the artists featured in the  Art Council of Livingston’s  current show is Anita Delal

After a career in teaching in West Orange, NJ, she began oil painting. Early subjects were skies. “I loved their constantly changing colors and patterns,” said Delal. Since they were not realistic, they led her to experiment with abstract painting.

Her paintings in this show are done with cold wax and oils. Cold wax is laid down and then  scratched and grooved into layers which adds texture and interest to her paintings. Inspiration for these pieces are the shapes, crevices, colors and markings throughout the canyons  in the National Parks of Utah.

“In my studio I tried to recreate the feelings I had when hiking through those canyons last May.” added Delal.

The exhibit comprises fine art disciplines including mixed media, jewelry, blown glass, painting, sculpture, pottery, printmaking and photography.

Trilogy Repertory to Hold Fundraiser for New Theater @ Fellowship Village Cultural Arts Center

theatre-prelim

The Party With a Purpose

WHEN: Friday, October 19
WHERE:
Primavera Regency on Valley Road in Stirling
TICKETS: $200-a-plate
Those interested in attending The Party With a Purpose can find RSVP information by clicking here.
Those who can’t attend the party can still help with a donation to Trilogy, click here to learn more about how to help.

Living as we do in the glow of Broadway, it’s easy to take great theater for granted. But it takes hard work and commitment. In our corner of New Jersey, a dedicated group has been bringing stories to life on stage for nearly 40 years. And now, as it is preparing to move into a wonderful new home, Trilogy Repertory is asking the community to be its guest.

Trilogy has agreed to be theater company in residence at the new Cultural Arts Center at Fellowship Senior Living in Basking Ridge beginning in 2019. The center, now in the final stages of construction, will include a state-of-the-art theater with seating for 200. Local audiences, including Fellowship residents, will be the prime beneficiaries.

“We’ve been keeping the momentum going with summertime Plays In The Park at Pleasant Valley Park in Basking Ridge for years, and we plan to continue,” said Henri Barre, Trilogy’s development director. “But now, adding this theater through the partnership with Fellowship will allow us to mount top-notch productions at other times of year as well. We’re excited to do more for quality theater in the Somerset Hills.”

Fundraising for the new center is in full swing. That effort is crucial for Trilogy and its audience, because Trilogy’s amount of access to the Cultural Arts Center will depend on how much it can contribute to the construction costs over the next three years.

Trilogy is grabbing the opportunity with both hands. And who better than a theater company to make a bold, dramatic stroke?

At The Party With a Purpose, a gala evening of dining and entertainment, the $200-a-plate dinner will help Trilogy take significant steps forward in its funding commitment to Fellowship Senior Living. A silent auction full of enticing prizes will help as well. Items to be offered include Broadway show tickets and experiences (including meet-and-greets with cast members), travel packages to Key West and other destinations, New York Yankees tickets with private stadium tours, and guitars autographed by music stars such as Katy Perry and Maroon 5.

Dore Schary, the Newark-born film director, writer, producer, playwright and head of MGM Studios in its 1950’s heyday, was the Hollywood mogul responsible for films such as “An American in Paris” and “Crossfire,” and the playwright of classics like “Sunrise at Campobello.”

Not just a leader in his industry, Schary was also outspoken about his Jewish heritage, and a strong believer in using film as a weapon to fight prejudice. Film scholar and adjunct professor of cinema at Yeshiva University, Dr. Eric Goldman, will chronicle Schary’s contributions to Hollywood and Broadway, and his battles for social justice and against anti-Semitism, through a lecture illustrated with film clips.

israel at a crossroads: shaping the future of a nation

WHEN: Wed, Oct 31, 2018, Panel at 7:30pm
WHERE: NJPAC, One Center St., Newark

What will Israel become? Much of the discourse around Israel abroad continues to focus on outdated paradigms. Within Israel, there is a growing realization that the country’s core challenges have shifted. Israel today is at a crossroads: It is home to some of the world’s most innovative companies and leading universities and medical centers, while a large – and increasing – share of the population is being left behind economically and socially.

Dr. Dan Ben-David, founder of the Shoresh Institution for Socioeconomic Research and professor at Tel Aviv University, will discuss these domestic changes and their impact on Israel’s still-evolving future.

With special thanks to Josh Weston

David N. Myers, Professor and Chair in Jewish History at University of California – Los Angeles, unpacks the mysteries of Jewish history in less than one hour based on his 2017 book of the same name.

middle east flashpoints: from iran and syria to isis and saudi arabia

WHEN: Wed, Nov 28, 2018, Panel at 7pm

Why is the Middle East seemingly impervious to change? Political, economic, social, and religious crises abound, producing what journalist and author Robin Wright has termed “sacred rage.” Ms. Wright, a veteran New Yorker reporter and Distinguished Scholar at the Woodrow Wilson Center, who has covered almost all of the region’s myriad conflicts, will share insights on the multiple challenges facing the region.
