Imagine knowing that every mouthful of food you ate could be your last. Inspired by the true story, Michelle Kholos Brooks’ Hitler’s Tasters will make its world premiere at Centenary Stage Company.
Winner of the 2017 Susan Glaspell Award, this alternately engaging and compelling play tells the story of the young women who were charged with tasting Hitler’s food so that he would not be poisoned. Three times day, every day, the young women have the opportunity “to die for their Führer.” But while they wait, like all girls throughout time, they gossip, they dream, they question and dance, until the door opens and the guard appears with each meal.
Centenary Stage Company is also offering a buffet matinee for both Wednesday afternoon performances. Buffet matinees are $45.00 per person and include private dining and the performance. Minimum of 25 reservations are required. Centenary Stage Company also offers discounted group sales for groups of 25 or more. Kaplen JCC on the Palisades Holds Special Art Exhibition to Celebrate Israel at 70

ISRAEL AT 70 is a month-long art exhibition in April showcasing more than 80 works of art by 26 local artists who have created art that reflect their appreciation for Israel, its people, and its culture and history. The exhibit includes an exciting and inspirational array of paintings, photographs, and mixed media works, curated from an open call to artists that encouraged everyone with a passion for Israel to participate. The end result is a colorful, must-see community art celebration.
“This exhibit celebrates our community’s love of Israel through the arts,” says Nina Bachrach, JCC Director of Arts and Culture Development. “We’ve brought together an incredible community of artists who are excited to spark the imagination of our community and to explore the cultural arts in an exciting way.”
The Waltuch Art Gallery is a community space that exhibits thematically Jewish artwork, or art produced by Jewish artists. All gallery exhibits are free and open to the community, where JCC membership is not required. Some, but not all, artwork in this special exhibition is available for purchase. A portion of the proceeds will support invaluable cultural arts programming at the JCC. Gallery exhibits are a part of the JCC’s Patron of the Arts Program, engaging our community in diverse and inspiring cultural arts experiences.

Champions of American music for more than a decade, Opus Two violin-piano duo, made up of violinist William Terwilliger and pianist Andrew Cooperstock, presents a centenary celebration of Leonard Bernstein, one of America’s most popular and iconic composers. Highlighting music from their acclaimed recordings, the program will include Sonata for Clarinet and Piano (arranged for vln/pno), Touches: Chorale, Eight Variations and Coda, and Four Moments from Candide. The program also includes Copland’s, Duo for Flute and Piano (arranged for vln/pno), and Sonata for Violin and Piano.
Critics have recognized Opus Two for its “divine phrases, impelling rhythm, elastic ensemble, and stunning sounds,” as well as its commitment to expanding the violin-piano duo repertoire. Following their long tradition of championing the works of great American composers, Opus Two recorded works of George Gershwin that reviewers called an “excellent” recording adding that the “performers throw themselves into this fresh look at Gershwin with enthusiasm and enjoyment.” The Gershwin is the newest addition to Opus Two’s growing discography of American music which includes CDs dedicated to works by Paul Schoenfield, Aaron Copland, Lowell Liebermann and their debut recording on the Naxos label, Leonard Bernstein: Violin Sonata; Piano Trio; New Transcriptions. In celebration of Bernstein’s centennial, Cooperstock recently released Leonard Bernstein: Complete Solo Works for Piano which was praised by Arts Fuse, “if there’s an essential Leonard Bernstein at 100 album, this is the one; with excellent performances of relatively unknown music deserving to be heard.” Cooperstock serves as artistic director of the University of Colorado, Boulder’s upcoming Bernstein at 100 Festival.
Recent concerts have taken them to Colorado, Florida, Texas and Hawaii. This past summer they returned to Germany’s Saarburg International Music Festival where they were in residence, and performed at Austria’s Classical Music Festival with concerts at St. Stephen’s Cathedral, the Mozart House in Vienna, the Esterhazy Palace and Haydn Conservatory in Eisenstadt where they performed Haydn’s Double Concerto. The duo returned to the Columbia Museum of Art in South Carolina last spring in a much anticipated multi-media performance of their recent commission by composer Meira Warshauer followed by performances in Honolulu and master classes at the University of Hawaii. Opus Two’s recent appearances include performances at the Australian Festival of Chamber Music, Maverick Concerts, Brevard Music Festival, the Round Top International Festival-Institute and Rocky Ridge Music Center.

CONCERT IN FLEMINGTON RESCHEDULED: NEW DATE
Music in Our Schools Month Concert
WHEN: Tuesday, April 10, 2018 at 7:00pm (originally scheduled for March 20th, but postponed due to weather). Doors will open 6:00pm Before the concert, student and adult small groups will perform in the lobby of the gymnasium. At 7:00pm, the concert will commence with an official welcome by the school principal. The performance is anticipated to be no more than one hour in length

ADMISSION: free with open seating, and all members of the community are welcome!
The Reading-Fleming Intermediate School (RFIS) PTO, in coordination with the RFIS Music Department, will host a free concert featuring the Hunterdon Harmonizers, Whitehouse Wind Symphony and Flemington-Raritan School District K-8 Student Choir. The month of March is recognized nationally as Music in Our Schools Month. This will mark the fifth time that the PTO has presented this concert.
“We are excited to host a very special night of music performed by a variety of talented local musicians in Hunterdon County including our very own Flemington-Raritan School District K-8 Student Choir” said Mr. Anthony DeMarco, Principal at RFIS. “Flemington-Raritan students and families, as well as members of the entire community, are invited to join us for this special free concert filled with music and song. The event is sure to be exciting as students from across the school district join together with the Harmonizers and Wind Symphony for this special concert!”
After performance by the Hunterdon Harmonizers, the Flemington-Raritan K-8 District Chorus and the Whitehouse Wind Symphony, young concertgoers will have the opportunity to meet with singers and band members, and learn more about how music is made!
The RFIS PTO, RFIS Administrators and RFIS Music teachers look forward to welcoming the community at the Intermediate School! Guest Review: “39 Steps” Hilarious Mystery Farce at The Barn

The Barn Theatre of Montville, New Jersey is currently presenting the London and Broadway success that spoofs Alfred Hitchcock's first 'man-on-the run' thriller The Thirty-Nine Steps. It was adapted for the stage by Patrick Barlow and based on the 1935 film from the novel by Scottish mystery writer John Buchan (buc-in). This production directed by Ron Mulligan is hilarious! It is a mix of the Hitchcock masterpiece with a juicy spy novel, add a dash of Monty Python and you have The 39 Steps, a fast-paced whodunit for anyone who loves the magic of theatre!
This 2-time Tony® and Drama Desk Award-winning treat is packed with nonstop laughs, over 100 zany characters (played by a ridiculously talented cast of 4), an on-stage plane crash, handcuffs, missing fingers and some good old-fashioned romance! In The 39 Steps, Richard Hannay is the suave lead character in this spy thriller set in pre-World War One England and Scotland. He is leading a boring life until he meets a woman with a thick accent who says she's a spy. When he takes her home to his London flat, she is murdered. Soon, a mysterious organization is hot on the man's trail in a nationwide manhunt that climaxes in a death-defying finale! A riotous blend of virtuoso performances and wildly inventive stagecraft.
Director Mulligan has cast four talented comedy performers. The man-on-the-run Richard Hannay is played to perfection by the properly mustached Dann Pryce (he even resembles Robert Donat the star of the 1935 film). The man-on-the-run comment is no exaggeration. Pryce spends almost the entire play literally running!
No thriller is correct without a lady in distress…sadly in 39 Steps that is the attractive Shawna Lagan (right) as Annabella Schmidt (the woman with the thick accent) saved by Hannay? NO, but murdered... with him as the prime suspect. Don’t fret about Ms. Lagan…she reappears as a randy Scottish Highland farmer’s wife speaking with a proper broad Scottish ‘burr’ accent. (Note: brogue is Irish). Finally, she is the prim and proper English woman, Pamela, that Hannay meets on a train to Scotland. Little does he know that romance is to follow. The players with the herculean task of covering all the wacky other roles..both male and female from London stage performers in tux' to Scottish inkeepers (husband and wife!) to international spies and much more are clown #1 Mark Herrmann and Clown #2 Jonathan Rudolph (a Barn vet). They are both excellent broad slap-stick performers ala John Cleese, or maybe more accurately a Marx brother! The clever use of the set, props, sound effects and sight gags in 39 Steps provides many of the belly-laughs that this fast-paced fun event delivers. Just what are the 39 steps? Why is Hannay on the run? How does he prove his innocence? Who is the man with the partial finger? Does he get the girl?
Sorry, you'll have to visit the Barn Theatre no later than April 8th to find out. When you do, don't blink or you will miss some of the screwball fun. The play with one intermission runs about two hours. Warning: there are several gunshots, flashing strobe lights and a man wears a kilt.
Also, note the very clever use of recorded music...all from Hitchcock thrillers. Listen also for subtle mentions of his film titles.
The excellent ringmaster (a/k/a director) of this wild, zany comedy is Ron Mulligan. His production team includes: scenic designer Lawrence Gabriel; lighting designer Cheryl Wibur; costume designer Linda Spirko; sound designer Larry Wilbur; production stage manager Craig Zimmerman; properties Marie Bogert; lighting operation Chris Reynolds; and sound operation Omar Kozarsky.
If we were to reduce our review to a few words we would turn to the old Scottish phrase, "Hoot mon, this is grrreat!"

Beauty and the Beast, Jr.
Based on the original Broadway production that ran for over thirteen years and was nominated for nine Tony Awards, and the Academy Award-winning motion picture, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast JR. is a fantastic adaptation of the story of transformation and tolerance. Disney’s Beauty and the Beast JR. features some of the most popular songs ever written by Alan Menken and the late Howard Ashman, along with new songs by Mr. Menken and Tim Rice. The classic story tells of Belle, a young woman in a provincial town, and the Beast, who is really a young prince trapped under the spell of an enchantress. If the Beast can learn to love and be loved, the curse will end and he will be transformed to his former self. But time is running out.
