Directed by Michael Bennett, DREAMGIRLS, the original Broadway production opened on December 20, 1981, and ran for 1,522 performances, winning six 1982 Tony Awards including one for Jennifer Holliday's performance as Effie. Jennifer Hudson received an Academy Award for her performance as Effie in the 2006 feature film adaptation.
