This Wonderful Life
written by Steve Murray
WHEN: Sunday, December 6, at 3:00pm
WHERE: Skyline Theatre, 10-10 20th Street, Fair Lawn

Proving that one man really can make a difference in the world, this is a hilariously touching stage adaptation of the iconic film “It’s a Wonderful Life” in which one actor inhabits virtually every character from the movie.

In early 2016, Skyline will once again present a brand-new and original musical production as part of the state-wide 2016 Stages Festival. The production will be mounted in March (precise scheduling has yet to be announced by the New Jersey Theatre Alliance, the festival’s producer) and will be followed by an audience talk-back with the piece’s authors, performers and directors.

Broadway in Bergen
WHEN:
the evening of April 11, 2016
WHERE: Skyline Theatre, 10-10 20th Street, Fair Lawn

The following month, Skyline’s annual gala concert, featuring an evening of performances by today’s brightest Broadway performers, will be held. This is Skyline’s one-night-only benefit concert to support the organization’s educational and mainstage programming.

SWEENEY TODD

book by Hugh Wheeler

WHERE: Skyline Theatre, 10-10 20th Street, Fair Lawn

Rounding out the season will be the devilishly popular and multiple Tony Award-winning Sweeney Todd. Skyline’s ‘Encores-style’ concert production will feature a professional cast of actors and actresses, as well as a Chamber Orchestra and a choir. It is based on an adaption by Christopher Bond.

“We at Skyline Theatre Company can’t wait to share our season’s offerings with our audiences. This season truly reflects our mission of entertaining and inspiring our audiences, and we look forward to engaging them in these exceptional new productions throughout our 2015-2016 season,” said Sam Scalamoni, Skyline’s Artistic Director.

Under the Streetlamp, America’s hottest new vocal group with 2 PBS top specials, performs an electrifying evening of classic hits from the American radio songbook. Exuding the irresistible rapport of a modern day Rat Pack, the quartet — recent leading cast members of the Tony Award-winning musical Jersey Boys — deliver an evening of unforgettable entertainment. You’ll hear Doo-Wop, Motown, old time Rock ‘n’ Roll and all of your favorite songs from The Drifters, The Beach Boys, The Beatles, and in a “show-stopping” salute to their mentors Frankie Valli and Bob Gaudio, the guys perform a medley from the “Four Seasons” catalog of outstanding hits.

All the songs are delivered in the inimitable Under the Streetlamp style, with tight harmonies and slick dance moves that will take you to back an era of sharkskin suits, flashy cars, and martini shakers – a flashback to a time when, on hot summer nights, people would gather under a streetlamp to sing their favorite rock and roll songs.

Classic hits are reborn for today’s audiences in this evening of great music and hilarious behind-the-scenes tales, complete with an exceptional band composed of world-class musicians.  With irresistible charm and rapport, Under the Streetlamp offers audiences the opportunity to get to know four critically acclaimed stars of stage and screen, Michael Ingersoll, Christopher Kale Jones, Brandon Wardell and Shonn Wiley. While each performer gets his moment in the spotlight, their synergy and charisma as a group has drawn an extremely devoted nationwide following.

Each performer carries with him an impressive list of credits.  Between them, they have appeared on Broadway, in feature films and on television – including special appearances during the New Year’s Eve celebration in Times Square, on “The Tonight Show,” “The Primetime Emmy Awards,” “The Tony Awards” and “The Oprah Winfrey Show.”

IGUDESMAN AND JOO: AND NOW MOZART

WHEN: THURSDAY, OCTOBER 8TH, 2015 – 8 PM
WHERE:
bergenPAC, 30 N. Van Brunt St., Englewood
TICKETS: $64-49-34
Tickets available at: www.ticketmaster.com or www.bergenpac.org or
Box Office (201) 227 1030

If Trey Parker and Matt Stone played the violin and piano, if Penn and Teller performed music instead of magic, and if Seth Macfarlane had a twin, they would be the brilliantly outrageous Igudesman & Joo. Violinist Aleksey Igudesman and pianist Hyung-Ki Joo are the inventive comic duo whose hilarious mix of music, pop culture and pure zaniness has won them fans of all ages and cultures worldwide. As evidence, their YouTube sketches have attracted close to 40 million viewers.

Highly trained musicians, their inspired silliness can start with Rachmaninoff or Liszt and find its way through martial arts, movie classics, rock, hip hop, folk, heavy metal and disco, step dancing and Monty Python’s Ministry of Silly Walks. Igudesman & Joo share the subversive comedic sensibilities of such influences as “South Park,” SNL, Ricky Gervais and the “Portlandia” team.

As an antidote to the stuffiness of most concerts, Igudesman and Joo transform the concert stage into a musical Pee-wee’s Playhouse, where the three Bs can be Bach, Beethoven and Bond, James Bond. Igudesman and Joo don’t just play the violin with a vibrating milk frother or use wood blocks to tickle the ivories, they do it with dazzling virtuosity. The result, as Vanity Fair puts it: “the craziest, most hysterically funny music ever.”

Their show And Now Mozart may or may not include any Mozart. It’s typical Igudesman and Joo, several standard deviations from the classical norm.

And, while most of the concert is played for laughs, Igudesman & Joo do show off their considerable musical chops with compositions of their own or from the classical repertoire. Ironically, if Igudesman and Joo weren’t such gifted serious musicians they wouldn’t be quite as funny. Their talent and extensive musical knowledge give them the freedom to be reverently irreverent.

The age-old tale of boy meets girl is presented with classic showmanship and high style when the longest-running musical of all time comes to Mercer County Community College's (MCCC's) Kelsey Theatre. PinnWorth Productions presents The Fantasticks

Drawing on plot elements reminiscent of Shakespeare and Rostand, The Fantasticks chronicles the budding romance between a boy named Matt and his neighbor, Luisa. Their fathers hatch a plot to bring them together by appearing to be feuding, knowing the teens will be even more drawn to each other if they believe their love to be forbidden. They do fall in love, but are then separated by family events and their need to mature and explore the world. When the lovers finally reunite, they possess a deeper understanding of life and an even greater appreciation of each other.

With book and lyrics by Tom Jones and music by Harvey Schmidt, the original Off-Broadway production at the Sullivan Street Playhouse in Greenwich Village premiered in 1960 and ran for a record-breaking 17,162 performances over 42 years. After closing in 2002, a revival directed by Jones opened in 2006 at The Theater Center, where it continues to captivate theater-goers almost ten years later. The show is packed with familiar tunes, including the memorable songs "Try to Remember," "Soon It's Gonna Rain" and "I Can See It."

The cast features Matthew Cassidy of Morrisville, Pa., and Peter Sauer of Yardley, Pa., as the Old Actors (Mortimer and Henry); Benjamin Menahem of Plainsboro as El Gallo, the narrator; Brent Tuccillo of Hamilton and Emily Applebaum of Lawrenceville as young lovers Matt and Luisa; Jina Nam of New York City as The Mute; and Sean McGrath of Churchville, Pa., and Bill Osman of North Brunswick as the scheming fathers, Huck and Bell.

Biloxi had its blues, Buffalo is often mooned over… and now Mantoloking gets its “stage-day in the sun” in the late Brick playwright John Morrison’s heralded DIVINE RIGHT.

This storied, sandy getaway (a vacation destination for both James Gandolfini and Katherine Hepburn) is the silent co-star of Morrison’s epic and often emotional play… enjoying its Monmouth County premiere.

clip_image002[5]DIVINE RIGHT revolves around a family devastated by the loss of its matron, and showcases father and war hero Jack and his daughters, Kieran and Riley… each seeking an outlet for their grief and redemption.  Kieran has left college to gravitate toward a religious cult run by the charismatic Jim Jones/David Koresh amalgam/prototype, RAY ALLMAN, who seeks to have Kieran become more than just a follower.  The plot then powerfully explores a family wishing to regain its former love and glory. The production stars Doug Bollinger, A.J. Ciccotelli, Carina Duffy, Lisa Siano and Thomas Ryan Ward and is directed by Darren DeBari. PHOTO: Riley Keating (Carina Duffy) looking away, Jack Keating (A.J. Ciccotelli) looking at his other daughter Kieran Keating (Lisa Siano) who in turns looks at the religious cult leader Ray Allman (Doug Bollinger). Photo credit: Thomas Ryan Ward

clip_image002[7]In creating DIVINE RIGHT, the late prominent and prolific New Jersey playwright, John Morrison, deftly tapped into the emerging, national zeitgeist of religious cults and unquestioned devotion.  Far before Waco and after Jonestown, Morrison’s DIVINE RIGHT initially received critical resistance which turned immediately into awe-inspiring respect for a playwright whose career was far too short-lived.

Morrison’s other greatly lauded, THE SHANNON DOYLE INCIDENT and THE LUSTY AND COMICAL HISTORY OF TOM JONES, have been produced throughout America and toured England –  garnering a National Professional Playwrights Award, N.J. Council on the Arts Fellowship, and placement as one of 5 plays selected for Middle Atlantic States Kennedy Center, American Collegiate Theatre Festival. “John’s widow and La Strada supporter, Beth Morrison, and my personal friend and artistic contemporary, writer/director, Darren DeBari, gifted this incredibly powerful piece… not only to La Strada but more so to the people of New Jersey. DIVINE RIGHT is both an insightful investigation into the human condition but also, in many ways, a love letter to the wonder of the true Jersey Shore,” shared La Strada Artistic Director, A.J. Ciccotelli.

ARTISTIC TRAVELOGUES OF “POP” HART @ ZIMMERLI ART MUSEUM

VAGABOND ARTIST: ‘'”POP” HART IN TAHITI, MEXICO, & THE CARIBBEAN

WHEN: September 1, 2015, to February 8, 2016
WHERE:
Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers. The museum is located at 71 Hamilton Street (at George Street) on the College Avenue Campus of Rutgers University in New Brunswick. The Zimmerli is a short walk from the NJ Transit train station in New Brunswick, midway between New York City and Philadelphia.
ADMISSION: free
For more information, visit the museum’s website www.zimmerlimuseum.rutgers.edu or call 848.932.7237.

Enjoy a virtual adventure with George Overbury “Pop” Hart, whose diverse travel experiences captured scenes of daily life in locales where few tourists ventured during the early part of the 20th century. While most American artists visited Europe to perfect their drawing and painting skills or to pursue styles inspired by avant-garde artists, Hart preferred extended trips abroad to more exotic – and affordable – destinations. Crisscrossing the globe between his first expedition to Latin America starting in 1900 and his last trips to North Africa and Cuba some 30 years later, these excursions were the primary source for his art throughout his career. Vagabond Artist: “Pop” Hart in Tahiti, Mexico, and the Caribbean, with more than 40 watercolors, drawings, and prints.

The works in Vagabond Artist demonstrate how George Overbury “Pop” Hart (1868-1933) not only introduced aspects of other cultures to American audiences, but also mastered watercolor and printmaking techniques that were admired by art critics and peers. “The everyday life of native inhabitants fascinated Hart and he was prolific at sketching what he observed – from market vendors to women washing clothes to fiestas,” noted Marilyn Symmes, the Zimmerli’s Morse Research Center for Graphic Arts Director and Curator of Prints and Drawings, who organized the exhibition. “These subjects often served as source material for his later prints. He took up printmaking in 1921, gaining a critical reputation during his lifetime and, ultimately, historical importance for his innovative efforts. This is a rare opportunity to see his original watercolors and drawings next to the prints in which he revisited favorite subjects.”

Born in Cairo, Illinois, and raised in Rochester, New York, George Overbury Hart took up sketching while still living at home. After working unsuccessfully in his father’s printing factory, he briefly studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in the 1890s. Starting in 1897, Hart regularly traveled to countries near and far. For several years, he earned his living as a sign painter to support his passion for sketching the sights he encountered. His trip to Tahiti and Samoa in 1903 and 1904, where he made his first accomplished portraits and figure studies, proved to be significant in the development of his unconventional art career.

Hart traveled extensively around Mexico in 1923, 1925, and annually from 1926 to 1929. Again, he produced a multitude of drawings resulting in lively images that reveal his fascination with picturesque scenery, colorful characters encountered in markets or on the road, and local pastimes, such as cockfighting or music-making. His views from his visit to the Mexican state of Veracruz are particularly noteworthy: there is a lovely watercolor of the church in Huiloapan (c. 1923-25) and he dramatically colored variant impressions of his 1925 etching Orizaba, Mexico. One view shows a storm-threatened scene, while the other features a majestic, sunlit vista accented by a turquoise river rushing through the valley.

Vagabond Artist: “Pop” Hart in Tahiti, Mexico, and the Caribbean was organized by Marilyn Symmes, the Zimmerli’s Curator of Prints and Drawings and Director of the Morse Research Center for Graphic Arts. Ms. Symmes was assisted by three Rutgers art history students – Leeza Cinar (BA, 2016), Yarden Elias (BA, 2014), and Reshma Nayyar (PhD, 2014) – in updating the documentation of hundreds of Hart’s prints, drawings, and watercolors in the museum’s records.
