ART CLASSES FOR CHILDREN

WHERE: 2020 Burnt Mills Road in Bedminster

The Center for Contemporary Art has redesigned its year-round program of art classes for children with a full roster of both mixed media and in depth classes for all ages and levels of expertise..

Young artists enrolled in eight-weekDraw, Paint, Throw!” classes will complete hands-on projects that encourage self-expression and creative problem solving while having fun. Learning to work in a variety of media- including acrylic paint, pastel, watercolor, tempera, colored pencil and charcoal, and oil pastels- the class explores the basic principles of visual art, art historical periods and styles, and the work of well-known artists. Students will also pay a visit to the ceramics studio for a wheel throwing demonstration, and explore the art on view in the galleries.

For students who want to deepen and develop their skills in a more focused way, six-week specialty in depth classes are available for each age group in the medium of choice. Students enrolled in “Draw!” work from a different still life each week, learning about the elements of a good drawing and developing a firm foundation of form, composition, proportion, value, perspective, and line quality. The class explores the basic principles of visual art, art historical periods and styles, and the work of well-known artists.

Paint!” is designed for young artists who love painting and want to deepen and develop their skills. The class explores painting in acrylics, watercolors, and paint pens with attention to the use of color, light, shadow, composition, and brush handling. Students will work from still life arrangements or favorite photographs, and even a live model.

Children's Ceramics ClassIn “Throw!” students will follow the steps of wedging, centering, pulling, forming, trimming and glazing, learning the basics and exploring the aesthetics of pottery, creating several finished pieces.
