MDR’S THEATRE IN THE LOFT: THIS TIME IT’S EVIL!

EVIL TIME
By David Johnston
Directed by Robert Ross Parker

. . . Time for MDR's monthly Theatre in the Loft! And this time, it's EVIL!

This month MDR presents a reading of David Johnston's Evil Time as part of our ongoing play development series focused on new and innovative American theatre. Come see a brand new work performed by MDR's world-renowned performers, and then stay after the show for amazing conversation with the writers and cast! Don't miss this next opportunity to help a new work take shape.

WHEN: Sunday, September 8th at 7 PM
WHERE:
SOPAC Loft, 1 SOPAC Way (behind the train station), South Orange

In Evil Time, we watch as Ray, a clean young Christian, begins his internship at King of Kings World Media Corp. (a nexus of power, media and political influence in the Christian right movement). He quickly discovers that all is not as it seems to be: Dr. Billy has visions, Florence carries a gun, and before long Ray is having an affair with a mysterioius male UPS carrier. Oh, and then the two of them uncover a fiendish plot by religious conservatives to bring about the end of the world. Violence, religious extremism, and black comedy all collide in this slapstick tragedy.

Unexpected twists and turns will keep you on the edge of your seat as it tells the story of college students Susan and Larry, who are invited to an New England mansion by its caretakers. Susan is encouraged to impersonate Veronica (a long-dead daughter of the family) in an effort to provide comfort to Veronica's only surviving sister. But once dressed in Veronica's clothes, Susan finds herself locked in the role... and locked in Veronica's room. [Photo by Tom Schopper]

The Village Voice said VERONICA'S ROOM is "like being trapped in someone else's nightmare... jarring and (with a) surprising climax... a neat, elegant thriller!"

By the time Edgar Winter left his hometown of Beaumont, Texas in the 1960's, he was already technically proficient in every aspect of music. A child prodigy who achieved international success early on, Edgar has found an audience in every major entertainment medium--music, film and television. A prolific writer, Edgar's music encompasses many different genres, including rock, jazz, blues, and pop. From his critically acclaimed 1970 debut release, Entrance, he has demonstrated his unique style and ability to cross the genre lines and do the unexpected. His early recording of "Tobacco Road" is a powerful, emotionally devastating masterpiece that propelled him into the national spotlight. Edgar followed Entrance with two hit albums backed by his group White Trash, a group originally comprised of musicians from Texas and Louisiana. White Trash enjoyed huge success, both with the 1971 release of the studio album, Edgar Winter's White Trash, and with 1972's follow-up live gold album, Roadwork.

With over 20 albums and numerous collaborative efforts to his credit, Edgar Winter has not been satisfied to ride the wave of popular music stardom. Major national television and radio campaigns have relied on Edgar's music to advertise their products. Edgar has also made frequent television appearances, both to promote his music, and to give his opinions on everything from Politically Incorrect to a commercial with George Hamilton for Miller Lite beer. He has appeared in the film "Netherworld", and the TV shows "The Cape,” "Mysterious Ways," "David Letterman" and "Jimmy Kimmel."

Edgar's music can be heard in no fewer than fifteen film and television projects, including Netherworld, Air America, My Cousin Vinny, Encino Man, Son In Law, What's Love Got to do With It, Wayne's World 2, Starkid, Wag the Dog, Knockabout Guys, Duets, Radio, The Simpsons, Queer as Folk, and Tupac Resurrection. Edgar's CD and DVD, titled, Live At The Galaxy was recorded live at the Galaxy Theatre for Classic Pictures in 2003.

Edgar Winter's live shows consistently receive rave reviews. His music is always evolving, and he is a master at stretching his skill and imagination to produce amazing results. He continues to thrill audiences with his live performances, always remaining on the cutting edge of music and style. Edgar is now at the very top of his game, and his future looks even brighter than his past.

Edgar and his wife, Monique, live in Beverly Hills with their little dog Mimi.

Lisa Lampanelli makes a departure from her signature “insult” comedy in the developmental production of her new one-woman show Skinny Bitch: NOT A Stand-Up Comedy Show.

The production, which is written by Ms. Lampanelli and 700 Sundays writer Alan Zweibel, will be helmed by Tony Award-winning director John Rando. In her first theatrical production, Lisa will reveal the woman behind the comic, and her struggle with food, men and body image. In turns hilariously funny, surprisingly touching and totally relatable, Skinny Bitch: NOT a Stand-Up Comedy Show will show a side to Comedy's Lovable Queen of Mean that few would guess exists.

Lisa has become a household name as a standout contestant on the fifth season of NBC’s Celebrity Apprentice and for famously roasting everyone from Betty White to Flavor Flav. Lisa appeared in the David Chase-directed feature film, Not Fade Away and is currently starring as a series regular on Bounty Hunters, CMT’s first-ever animated show, airing Saturdays at 10 PM ET/PT. This Grammy-nominated equal opportunity offender is a regular on late-night television, the Comedy Central Roasts, and is a frequent guest and guest host on Howard Stern's Sirius satellite radio shows. Lisa has also appeared on EXTRA as a guest correspondent, is a frequent guest and co-host on TMZ, and has sold out theaters across the country, including NYC's Radio City Music Hall, the Chicago Theatre, and Carnegie Hall.

Lampanelli joined the ranks of comedy greats with her 2009 HBO comedy special, Long Live the Queen, and that same year, released her autobiography, Chocolate, Please: My Adventures in Food, Fat and Freaks. Lisa's greatest hits CD, Equal Opportunity Offender, was released in April 2012.

Three different students Sophie, Tony and Sharon have the opportunity to sing and receive constructive criticism. As each student performs, they become”‘victims” of Callas’s callousness. The Family Gathering portrays a Thanksgiving Dinner gathering where hidden and repressed feelings and wounds surface as the meal progresses. The play presents the personal perspectives of a mother, her daughter, the daughter's husband, the mother's husband and a family friend. We see from these different perspectives that the facts of these wounds have very subjective roots and interpretations. If the play has any discernible theme, that theme would be the role of a woman as mother, wife, and woman in contemporary society.
