This series of performances is designed to celebrate the contributions of Appalachia to American music and literature past and present, while simultaneously highlighting the need to protect that heritage and mountains that gave birth to these arts.  This year’s programming is inspired by the work of two important people in Appalachian history: Bascom Lamar Lunsford, a premier collector of Appalachian songs and preserver of Appalachian culture from the early 20th Century, and Joe Lovett, the contemporary pioneering environmental lawyer who has fought to end mountain-top removal coal mining in Appalachia and around the country.

WAMFEST is an annual series hosted by Fairleigh Dickinson University’s (FDU) Maxwell Becton College of Arts and Sciences and its creative writing program that has received recognition and sponsorship from the National Endowment for the Arts.  Since 2009, the Words and Music Festival has celebrated the literary qualities of popular music and broken the barriers between the community and academia.  The contributions of past artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Robert Pinsky, Rosanne Cash and Eugene Mirman have helped bridge the gap between the literature in universities and of the people.
