A HOST OF NEW EXHIBITIONS @ MONTCLAIR ART MUSEUM

LOOKING FORWARD
Gifts of Contemporary Art from the Patricia A. Bell Collection

WHEN: Opening September 22, 2013
WHERE:
Montclair Art Museum, 3 South Mountain Avenue, Montclair
ADMISSION:

This exhibition will feature a selection of contemporary art donated over the past 10 years by New Jersey–based donor Patricia A. Bell; shown together here for the first time, her gifts have both shaped and strengthened MAM’s contemporary art collection.

New Directions/Jean Shin: Host

One of today’s leading public artists, Jean Shin has worked directly with the MAM community to create Host specifically for the Museum. Fabricated from metal forks, knives, and spoons, many of which have been donated by residents of the Montclair area, the sculpture is a special commission celebrating MAM’s centennial and the third in MAM’s annual New Directions series of contemporary art exhibitions.

Robert Barry: One Billion Colored Dots and Diptych, Window-Wallpiece for the Montclair Art Museum

The pioneering conceptual artist Robert Barry, based in Teaneck, NJ, donated One Billion Colored Dots, a major, limited edition work to the Montclair Art Museum. It comprises 25 volumes with one billion dots, which are complemented by a selection of works by friend and fellow pioneer of Conceptual Art, Sol LeWitt. In addition, a site-specific installation located in the Blanche and Irving Laurie Foundation Art Stairway titled Diptych, Window-Wallpiece for the Montclair Art Museum will be on view. It uses allusive words on the walls and windows to successfully engage the viewer.

Monika Bravo: New Work

Two works by the multidisciplinary artist Monika Bravo will be on view on MAM’s outdoor video monitors. Bravo’s work incorporates still and moving images as well as sound and interactivity to explore our emotional and cognitive relationships to the world that surrounds us.

100 Works for 100 Years: A Centennial Celebration (Part One)

To celebrate its centennial, the Montclair Art Museum is featuring 100 works of art from the collection, throughout its galleries and grounds. Identified with special labels, these works will be installed in phases throughout Fall 2013, with all on view by January 15, 2014, when the Museum will host a special birthday party.
