SPEAKER: Simon Ottenberg, Ph.D., Emeritus Professor of Anthropology at the University of Washington, Seattle Multiple African modernisms emerged across the continent throughout the 20th century. This talk explores the development of a modern art movement at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, from 1960 to 2000, focusing on six artists and their work. Dr. Simon Ottenberg is emeritus professor of anthropology at the University of Washington, Seattle, and a pioneering scholar of Nigerian art. In 2012, he donated his collection of nearly 150 works of modern and contemporary African art to the Newark Museum.
